Encourage Branching

I have a few plumies that I rooted a year ago and I can't stand the shape. They are single stem plants between 2-3' tall. They have a nice amount of foliage, I just don't care for the way they look, especially the taller one. None have bloomed yet. I was considering cutting the very tip to see if that would cause them to branch. I know if I do that I'll be sacrificing any blooms that I might get this year. Should I just wait and see if they develop any inflos over the summer and if they don't just go ahead and cut them at the end of the season or should I do it now? I wasn't going to trim them back enough to make a cutting, just an inch or two to destroy the tip. Has anyone ever done that to make their plumeria branch?
