Please help my poor plumeria!!!!

Okay, I've had it for 3 days and I've already gone wrong! Can you all help me figure out what this is and what to do about it?

1) Are the brown spots sunburn? I can't believe I didn't see this coming... Will it be okay if I leave it in shade/indirect sun until 12pm daily and then move it into direct sun gradually, maybe leaving it out until 1pm the next day, 2pm the next, and so on? I am also thinking of leaving it inside near a window for the next 4 days while I have to be out of town... is that ok?

2) Could the yellowing of the leaves be over or underwatering? I got it Saturday, watered it Sunday and then again Monday because it has been scorching hot! (95-100). Is that too much for it? It was in soil with sand, and now I've replanted the original rootball and original soil in 2/3 perlite, 1/3 aged Miracle Grow (3 months old). Also, shouldn't I drench the soil once since I repotted it? I haven't watered since repotting last night, for fear of wrecking more leaves...

3) I decided to angle it differently and cover a "black hole" near the base where another branch used to be. The whole seems old and dried out. Do you all think it's a problem I covered it?

Thanks so much in advance for any advice! I am so in love with this thing, especially since repotting it, it hurts! I feel like an idiot to have several of its beautiful green leaves turn brown and yellow within 3 days...

Bramasole, where are you in TX? I'm just north of Dallas. I would say your plumie is just responding to the changes in being repotted. Mine are all out in direct sunlight and they do fine.

I wouldn't water any more until it gets good and dry though. Plumies would typically rather be dry than wet. You also might have a bit too much perlite in your soil mix. You need a lot of perlite for rooting cuttings but for a mature plant with lots of leaves you probably need more soil. A good cactus mix works well, either 100% as is or mixed with a small amount of perlite.

Hi Kevin,

the brown and yellow leaves happened before I repotted (last night)... I will take out some of the mix out and add more soil to the pot.
Do you think I need to bring it inside for part of the day until it gets used to the sun? If all the leaves end up burned, it would break my heart! And do you think it's okay I buried the black hole?

You are correct, Bihai. The tag on this one does say "Anthurium Andreanum" its my other anthurium that I suspect is an amnicola, also labeled and A andreanum. Here's some pics of her: She's in glorious good health, has been from the moment I bought her. But what can I do to nurse the sick fellow back to health? I'm a newbie to the world of Anthuriums, so any help would be appreciated :). Should I repot with orchid bark? Water more/less often?

Thanks Kristi! I was so excited to buy my Amaryllis bulb and was so worried today when it turned red. I actually dug it back up and put it in a pot to keep inside just to keep it safe. =) I am from South Carolina...I think a zone 7. Where are you living? My mom gave me an Amaryllis a couple of years ago. It bloomed the first year and was gorgeous! It didn't bloom this year tho. I kept it inside both years. So is my Amaryllis okay????

I agree. I wouldn't really worry about it they're very hardy plants. I have a plant thats trunk is ripped in half and it still fine. it's flowering at the moment. Yours just really looks like sunburn. When they are sunburnt the trunk tends to split and turn into a brown color.

why seal with plastic wrap??? seems like that would promote problems. I see it as putting saran wrap over a fresh, moist wound instead of letting it scab over. But if it works for you, whatever.... As OP reading the various suggestions, you can glean that is must be relatively easy to root a plumie as many ways seem to work. I say, cut, let it callus until cut area feels like a scab, 1-7 days. You can dip in rooting powder immediately after cut to improve odds of rooting success but not absolutely necessary. I bring mine indoors and place on a table and they seem to scab over fast, probably the dryness caused by AC. But a shady outdoor spot will work also. Pot in light soil, water thoroughly, place in the hottest sun you have and do not water again until you see new leaves, about a month to 6 weeks, depending on the cultivar. As you see leaves developing/growing increase watering. Do remember that during rooting process, you can correct if underwatering but you CANNOT correct if overwatering--only outcome in that case is rot. Good luck. Edited to add: I see you live in z8 so rooting process will take a little longer, especially if nights are cooler. Plumies LOVE heat, the more brutal, the better. You can do this.

Ah yes, the brown does look like it could be sunburn. Your plan for acclimating sounds like it will work. I wouldn't think there is any need to bring it inside. It would probably prefer the heat of being outside.

As for the hole, you might consider filing it. I think Bill (tdogdad) likes to use DAP, a tub and tile sealant for things like that. The concern with it open, especially under the soil, would be that it might hold water and potential start to rot.
