Did I kill my Washingtonia Seeds?

I had read on here someplace that its good to soak them in warm water as hot as you can get to come out of the faucet, so I did that and changed the water about three times a day. But now I'm afraid that I could have killed my seeds. I have more, so its no big deal if these ones do turn out to be dead. Do you think I could have hurt these ones? The water was REALLY hot. Like steaming hot. I thought what I was doing was okay, even though it seemed weird to me.

They are probably ok. Washingtonia seeds germinate really easy. I soak mine in room temp water, overnight and plant the next day. 2-3 weeks later I have hundreds sprouting. I don't think that the hot water is needed for Washingtonia, but helps on some of the thick coated seeds, like the needle palm.

I doubt that the heat from the sink would do any damage. The heat from the sun in 100+F days easily exceeds that temperature.

Don't give up! I can tell you our 4 Sambucus shrubs really took off this year after being planted 3 years ago. They are finally stunning and thriving! We were really considering giving up on them if they looked as ratty at the end of this season as they did for the last couple. I'm really stunned and wish I had a before/after pic because it really is something. By the way... No fertilizer - no nothing other than it's "natural" environment and some minimal pruning/shaping.

i haven't tried it but it sounds pretty good and it won't kill everything for good i don't think!! LOL Mix 1 gallon white vinegar, 1 cup table salt, and 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid together and spray on weeds. To do so, remove approximately 2 cups of vinegar from the jug, pour in the salt and dishwashing liquid, then return the 2 cups of vinegar to the jug. Close the lid and shake to mix. Transfer to a spray bottle (after shaking to mix the ingredients) as needed. It works as well, if not better, than Chemicals, but is much cheaper. Be careful, it will kill whatever you spray it on! If you go purchase vinegar, 10% acidity, 20% acid would be better, and spray it on the weeds in the heat of the full sun, you will have an effective weed killer. or Here's a homade weed killer if you want to avoid harsh chemicals. 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp. of baby shampoo 1 tbsp. of gin, or listerine mouthwash 1 qt. of warm water Mix all ingredients in a bucket, and pour into a hand held sprayer. Drench each weed to the point of run-off, taking care not to get any spray on surrounding plants

You did not kill your seeds. If cold weather killed seeds, there wouldn't be any plants in most parts of the world. All of the seeds you listed are seeds I will be putting outdoors in the next few weeks to be frozen until spring. In the spring they will pop up just fine after being out in snow and cold for months. Check out the Winter Sowing forum and you will find hundreds of folks putting there seeds outside in the freezing cold right now.

I planted them outside for their winter stratification. There was one gal bag of them I overlooked in the freezer and so i got it out and planted about 12 of them 2 weeks and two days ago. Nothing so far.

In my experience the only thing that will hurt a washy seed
is rot.
