I just started getting in hot pepper gardening this year and so far its been great. I picked up 5 bhut seeds while on vacation and when I got home planted them in my indoor seed greenhouse.

They were doing GREAT and I was getting excited. They all sprouted and were about 2 in tall. Well yesterday I put them in my outside greenhouse. When I came home part of the plastic came down on the pot and when I pulled them out the fiber pot was literally STEAMING and my plants were fried.

I am totally bummed. No one locally grows super hots so i am trying to find some live plants to get shipped to my house. I really want Bhut's but will settle for other super hots (dorset naga, red savina, etc) if I can get them already started. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

My buddy steam-cooked an entire flat of Bhut, Black Pearl, and Scotch Bonnet seeds last week.
He was so eager to replace the other seedlings that he left out in the sun, that he got a little ahead of himself....
trying to hasten the process by placing his seed-house outdoors. The dome on his tray had been closed, and was steaming
by the time he opened it. I saw the steam and told him his seeds were likely cooked.

He started over, but I advised he keep the other trays around in case of a surprise germination.

In my experience, I've found that neither seeds nor seedlings require humidity.
I cover my flats with a single piece of plastic wrap, which I remove as soon as I see
signs of germination. I use a very dry soil mix of pumice, perlite, and fir bark,
all screened to between 1/16 - 1/4 inch sized particles. I water from the top, and I never
let my containers sit in water.

That's some tough luck on your seedlings chef.

As far as mail-ordering plants, most folks recommend Cross Country Nurseries, located in Rosemont, NJ. I think they're sold out of Bhuts for this year though. Also, they have a 12 plant minimum order, I believe.

Another I've heard good things about is Susan at The Chilewoman.com, located in Bloomington, IN. It looks like she may still have some Bhuts, plus she's a little closer to you. I think she has a 6 plant minimum order.

Keep in mind, I've never ordered from either of these companies. I've just heard and read good things about both.

Tim: stop whining! We've seen your beautiful plants and how big they are. You'll have peps in no time! No powder or sauce left??? Sheesh! ;) Btw, nice overwinter job judo. I tried halfassedly a couple years ago. Now i say, WHY!?!? I usually pull my plants in January when it's time to start all over again anyhow. Okay, I went to dig out the seeds I had in my soil and compared them to the ones I have in coco coir starters planted about 2 weeks later, and I solved both mysteries. Q) Where did that seed go? A) In the pot next to it. Yes, I'm an idiot. I had pre-soaked the seeds in warm water for about half an hour before planting, and they were sticking to my fingers as I tried to plant them. The one container I checked was apparently the exact one that stuck to my finger long enough to get planted in the next pot with it's sibling by mistake. Q) Why have they not sprouted in a month and a half? A) When I dug the seeds up, they were still flat and wrinkly. Out of curiosity I brushed some of the coir off the top of my others, and they were nice and plump and fat (about ready to sprout too, from the looks of them). Guess my drainage was a little *TOO* good in my bottle pots when combined with being out in the sun. They just plain didn't stay moist enough to break out of hibernation. I've now moved the seeds over to a starter tray with my third batch of seeds I planted the other night. These I'm keeping out of direct sunlight and covering in plastic wrap to keep the moisture levels high, and I'll be sure to water them more often so they stay more moist.

I would say pick up some bonemeal for them. Peppers need alot of Calcium (especially for habanero or bhut varieties) for their leaves and peppers or you get blossom end rot. Since you said you haven't had much water on them I assume this is your problem barring something damaging them like a pest. If your looking to save some money save some eggshells and bake them in the oven for a little while and grind them up. Take either the bonemeal or ground eggshells and sprinkle liberally around each plant and water in. Best of luck. p.s. Mary, thats crazy! A few months ago I started mysteriously getting catalogues and stuff for my mom. She's lived in the same house I grew up in since about 1990.. and thats 800 miles away from here. Erica, Thats one determined plant. I'm currently on a seek and destroy mission for the following things 1) 'wild' catnip plants, 2) the mysterious vine taking over next to the pond. "Leaves of 5 can't stay alive!" and 3) queen annes lace. Currently all three battles are being lost simultaneously in this picture!!

Well needless to say, Ive learned a LESSON!

The 6 plant minimum kinda stinks cause I already have so many peppers planted and I need more like I need a hole in my head lol. If it comes down to it I may just have to do it.

I am using a self-watering seed starter to get some Bhuts & Tepins started. Now that is above 50 degrees during the day, I've been leaving the container outside. It went up to 80 today. Do you think I did the same to my seeds???

Its possible. If they are covered and its sunny/80 degrees it is probably real hot in there. Im totally new to the gardening thing and trying to learn as much info as possible. My seedlings were literally steaming so that was my indication they got fried!

chefben4 - if its sunny and 80, do not cover them. Just leave them in a styrofoam cup with soil and keep them moist and be patient.

To start my bhuts I put all the seeds in a styrofoam cup with soil and sprinkled a little soil on top then soaked the cup (of course there were tons of holes on the bottom for drainage). Every couple of days I would again soak the soil. Excellent drainage is a must though. The seeds sprouted in about 1-2 weeks. I'm waiting for them to get strong enough to put in soil as we speak.

Typical Michigan, when I put them in the greenhouse the high was 53, then the next day in went up to 80 and thus they got barbequed.

It happens, now I need to find some more plants/seeds.

Well, I had a couple serrano sprouts in the same container that are still alive and kicking. I'm hoping that the fact they are buried in 1/8 - 1/4" of soil, they survived. Of course, with my tepin seeds, I may not know for another month...

Someone up top mentioned a black pearl pepper. I just bought a pepper plant yesterday with the same name. It was sold as an "ornamental" pepper, and had a warning on the label about how hot it was. It's leaves are nearly black and it has purple flowers. Is this the plant you're referring to? And is it edible? I think the peppers are either red or purple. It was just so pretty, I had to snatch it up.

gah.....i ordered some plants, not seeds, from a company in florida last year called "greenearth inc" and was very happy with what i got....nice, strong, healthy plants.....but I just checked and theyre sold out for the season....

No worries! I found a great local seller via craigslist with some beautiful superhots. 7 pots, Trinada Scorpions, Naga Morich, Bhut Jolokia (Choc,etc.), and many more. If you are in michigan id love to point you in the right direction.
