My three coconuts in a row!

This is not where they are usually. my tall and the smallest dwarf (left) have been in the middle of my back yard getting direct sun from about 10:00 (June) and 7:00 all summer. The dwarf in the middle i had between other local plants to really try and see it stretch as much as possible. The dwarf on the left will be going down to West Palm Beach. I told my budy to keep it potted until noext spring before putting it in the ground. It's in perfect health and after last winter down there I like the idea of him being able to just bring it in a few nights here and there.

Thank you, I can guess at their age. The smaller dwarf (left) and tall (right) were shipped to me from Hawaii in May of 2009. The dwarf was pretty small so I'm guessing it germinated in the fall of 2008. Last years cool July killed a lot of the existing growth. Everything you see now is from last winter until now. The tall I'd guess germinated sometime in 2008. The larger dwarf (middle) I bought at H Depot last October and it is just now starting to push up a splitting frond. I'd have to guess it germianted in the fall of 2008 as well. I am VERY excited about the tall especially. The fronds are completely split and adult looking. You can see from the beer bottle how big it is getting. Our forcast is nothing but sun for the next 10 days and after a bit of a cool off (high of 75 Thursday) we bounce back into the mid 80s for at least a week. I am going to have it in my living room window. It will get completely covered by a few hours of morning sun. I also set it on a heat mat so that the soil temp never falls belose the 70s. I will help it with a grow light as well.

For most herbicides a mist is better than a stream. Glyphosate works by being absorbed by the leaves of the weed which take it to the roots and kill the weed. Soaking the ground is not what you want to do. Next time try applying it as a mist but do this when the wind is calm. If needed you can cover the grass with a sheet of plastic while spraying to avoid overspray. If the Round Up is the culprit more than likely whatever is brown is dead. You could cut the dead stuff out and try reseeding.

Hi Unprofessional, Can you share what mixed conifers you are using in your border? and how you space and arrange them? I live near Chicago, but near the lake so the zone is marginally 6. Over the last two months I am researching different options for my ~300f long border adjusent to a small road in a woodland area. I am considering spruce omorika gotelli, picea orientalis gracilis, p.orientalis gowdy and p.abies hillside upright... In general I am trying to keep it narrow and not terribly high, so I will need to do some early pruning... thanks

What did the damage look like? I havent seen many sick washys over here in CA. Except a few that started to grow smaller and smaller fronds, then they turned yellow untill the palm is just a dead pole.Sounds kinda like lethal yellowing, but I don't think its over here yet? Other than that my coconut palm did get aphids. A mix of dish soap and water took care of that problem. Hope this helps a little and good luck:)

Hi Andy,

They are getting big and add a strong tropical feature to the yard. Summer is not over and there's plenty of warm and even hot weather ahead. You can keep the palms in those pots for 1-2 years because the're root-ball is compact.

I think you may get more feedback if you post the photos on the sight and it would be easier for us. Alex has instructions on how to do that if you are not sure.

I'd love instructions on how to do that. I tried last night but could not figure it out. Pictures taken with my phone, I just can't seem to get clear pictures with it.

I was trying to see if I could find a post I made about a year ago on posting pics, but since I cant find it, Ill write a new one when I have some time later today! Hope it helps you out!!

It's pretty simple if you use photobucket and then just COPY and PASTE the HTML Code.

I like Photobucket only because you get big pictures!

Yep, thats pretty much it! You just plug in your camera or your phone to the computer, save the pictures, go on Photobucket (You can easily make a free account if you dont have one), and press the download button on your main page. Once they are all downloaded you can click on a picture. That will open up a new page with the picture you clicked only larger. Keep your eye to the left side as you scroll down that page. You should see some links (4 to be exact). Using your mouse, copy the HTML link (3rd one down) and paste it on your messages here. When you click preview, your picture should be there. If you want to upload more pictures, copy and paste the links to those pictures and they should all appear on your message!
