Digging up peppers for overwintering

Is it recommended to dig up peppers plants for overwintering? I thought about digging up a Habanero and a few rocotos.

If they can be dug up, what should I watch out for?

For overwintering are they just put into pots watered sparingly and feed a little fertilizer?

Dean sure you can but i don't know how much luck you will have with habs unless you buy some high intensity lighting system or you have very good lighting in your house. Another thing you will run into is aphids. I guarantee there will be some on your plants that will be outside. I battled them little buggers off a rocoto plant i tried to overwinter but i grew it in a pot rather than digging it up.

Dig them up, severely prune them back, put in container, water enough to keep them alive and very little or no fertilizer. A sunny window or shop lights will suffice. All you want to do is keep them alive, right?

If you got the $ go for MH or HPS lighting. I think there are combination bulbs now. Maybe one of the hydro growers will know. GE Sunshine tubes work just fine too.

maesy: I have never left more than one leaf on a p-stem for storage purposes. I think I will try to leave three leaves on a couple of plants that look very close to fruiting time right now. The more leaves the plant has when a bloom comes, the more fruit it will produce. Gardenguy could be right...it's just an idea, and something I want to experiment with this Winter. jbcarr: The only banana I stored in a pot under the house last Winter was a SDC with a large corm already. I cut all the leaves off and laid the pot sideways under the house. It choked a few Spring leaves before growing normally again. The roots will die on a plant stored bareroot, regardless of how many there are. Just make sure the corm is dried out before storing. LynnD: Sandy is right. Stick it out in the garage, raised above the floor if possible (like on a pallet, or some wood planks), and cover it with a sheet if it gets real cold. You really only need to worry if it gets below 32F. SilverD: You can take all of the roots off of your musella lasiocarpa and it will be fine, as long as you store it somewhere cool, dark, and dry. Musellas store exeedingly well! I had no problems, with even some very small plants. I also stored 1 in the house, without roots, in a pot of dry peat, in a dark closet. It was just a little below room temperature in the closet, and the musella came through just fine. Very tough little plants!! I haven't seen this post in quite some time. I had no idea people were asking me questions, as it isn't even my post, so sorry for the delay. I will be digging my plants in the next couple of weeks, and plan to have a photoessay posted online when I do. I'll probably post it on the bananas.org forum, an infinitely superior forum to this one in my opinion (although I do like this one too). Looking for a big bag of Dolomitic lime

Gary, Last year I tried the garden lime found at Menards and Lowes garden areas. I don't think it said Dolomitic on it, but I can tell you my pepper plants in my containers produced peppers like there was no tomorrow. By the end of Oct I was tired of having to cover due to frost potential that I finally had to pull them (felt bad). My sisters been adding the same lime to her veggie garden for several years and she gets some good produce. I think the bags I bought were 50lbs, I think they had 2 sizes too. Sandy

Thanks Blue Heron! I thought about trying to dig and plant within the same week, which I guess I can just see how the soil is at the new house, was just afraid that the roots wouldn't have time to re-establish before the soil froze and it might stress them out (though maybe they will be just as stressed in burlap). I do think the ideal situation is to have them in their new homes vs wrapped somewhere or in a pot but guess it just depends on the winter this year. Unfortunately for us the timing of finding a house we didn't know we wanted is coinciding with winter coming--and I had planted many things this year expecting to be in this house for at least 5 years. I could also put them all together in the barn, keep forgetting that we may have a barn. That might work better if they need a cold period and I can't get them planted? Also wasn't sure if the 'dark' of the basement would kill the upper stems, so maybe barn is better anyway if they can get some light? I also have peonies that just arrived a few weeks ago that I put into pots for now, sad that I won't see flowers next year from them, can those overwinter directly outside or would barn be better for them as well?

How much do I need to cut the pepper plant back? How much root do I need? Plant in regular dirt?

Some places say put in a basement. Are the saying put where there is very little light? While you are saying put under bulbs. I am confused.

Dean,

Keep as much of the rootball as possible, but trimming the ends is supposed to stimulate root growth. Plant in a good soil mix such as ProMix BX. Basements are used because generally are lower temperature and upper 60s or even lower is ideal for overwintering. A 36" plant can be cut back to 12-18". Be sure and leave some side branches and not just a 12" main stem.

If Allen (Chance) sees this thread he might have other suggestions. The above has worked for me.

Dean, I've grown quite attached to 4 habs that are emerging from their *second* overwintering. I intend to see them through to old age :-). They were never in the ground - so I can't address that part of your question - but they've done well under 40W floro growlites. They do more than barely stay alive - they actually grow a bit and even produce some very tiny fruits in the winter. Granted I also have a heater that keeps them around 75F during the day..

Agree with ncage about the aphids - they will be a problem. I tried a lot of things and had mediocre results -- until I bought ladybugs. I finally got the peppers in an enclosed space downstairs so let some ladybugs loose last fall. I haven't seen a single aphid or whitefly since (7 months). That is quite amazing to me; that isn't pest 'control', that's utter and complete annihilation.
