Yikes!.....a worm?

Hi Everyone,

Today I was checking out some of my cuttings that I potted up approx. 6 weeks ago. One of them I noticed that the stem below the potting medium was very soft, not mushy but soft. I took the cutting out and the very bottom of the cutting was still firm but about 2" above that was almost hollow feeling. I broke that portion open and I saw what appeared to be some type of worm. The whole stem was ruined, but the tips seemed to be okay. I cut the 3 tips and applied some rootone to them and now I'm letting the cut end dry and callous. Has anyone experienced such a thing and did I do right by cutting off the tips which each are about 7"? Also, has any one ever tried to root a cutting in 100% perlite or water root a cutting? Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Rick
