I agree with Island Breeze. I have found Roebellini to be almost foolproof. I drag them inside in october, put them in a south window and water them a couple of times a month. Here in upstate NY, we get very little sun in the winter. In early May I put them out on my deck in full summer sun and they are completely happy. Mine grow all year long but obviously a bit faster in the winter. Compare that to my kentia palms.I can't even let them sniff the sun in the summer or the leaves will be burnt to a crisp. My kentia also doesn't do as well in the winter relative to the roebellini. I always seem to get leaf browning on the lower leaves in the winter due to low humidity (I think). The kentai also grows painfully slow putting out only 1 or maybe 2 spears a year. It also apparently doesn't like it's roots disturbed either. I repotted it once and it really looked pretty bad for a couple of years after that. So to be honest, my kentia's don't ever really get too much bigger. As I trim off the lower brown fronds they are replaced by the new ones, which in turn then brown and the cycle continues. I bought the kentia as 4 or 5 plants in one pot for like 70 bucks. the roebelleni's cost me like 5 bucks each at the big box store. Always dotting on the kentia and never worry about the darn roebies. Still..kentia's are really cool looking palms...almost like a coco to my eye.

Rhapsis and Kentias are very attractive indoors and are both tolerant of bright but not necessarily direct sun. And while they may be more costly initially, consider that once you buy one of these, they tend to hang around--for years. I've spend much more on the endless secession of Majesty palms. Also great indoors is the Pygmy Date. In fact, it's one of the few palms that will actually look like a mini palm tree as it develops a decent truck at a smaller size. Chamaedoreas are also great indoors. I would also suggest Spindle Palm, Bottle palm and Triangle Palms--especially like the Spindle among these three.--The Spindle reminds me of Coconut palms but are much easier inside to grow--but they are BIG growers. You might also try Fishtails (Caryota)--they also do well for me. Happy planting!

All of those methods may work but even if you kill them off you still have a nasty film on the leaves. Unless you have a palm so big and heavey you cant move it, it only makes sence to take it out for the summer. months of rain really clean it up. In addition you will get your strongest growth out of it. I have a double roebi that has about a foot of trunk and is ablut 2.5 feet overall. They were languishing in a grocery store parking lot when I got them last October for 8 bucks. I had to cut off quite a bit of the fronds as it was pot bound, under-watered, and getting no sun. I repotted it and it made a SLOW comeback over the winter. It's been outside in full sun since the first week of May and it looks good as new. it has already become one of my most attractive palms.

they have a whole bunch of Kentias growing here in what must be 100 gallon planters in our shopping mall. They have been there since we moved here, about 15 years ago. I would SWEAR they have stayed the same size. None are over 10 feet. We aren't a huge city, I don't think they have ever switched them out.
