Thank you so much for sharing your pictures with us. I keep thinking Hawaii wouldn't be a bad place to live. Here in Carlsbad it was 58F today, and we got 1/2 inch of cold rain. My plumerias were shivering and dreaming of the tropics...

Hey Freak, I hear what you are saying. I do cut other plant's cuttings at 45 degrees. However, plumerias are different from other plants. Do you ever wonder why plumerias do not naturally grow roots from the side of the bark? Just about every plant on the planet does that. The reason is because plumerias have no way to attach the new roots to the wood. Plumeria roots grow from callus material that eventually turns into wood and encapsulates the old wood. I said encapsulates because it never attaches to the old wood, you can peel the old wood from the new wood like an onion leaf, just like in the picture below. So, in order to form roots you must stimulate the plant to form the cambium callus. The plant cannot form roots without this cambium callus. Also, the plant will not just form this cambium callus out of the blue. Angle cuts only develop roots at the tip because all the rooting energy goes to the lowest point. Square cuts always fill the whole cambium perimeter with roots, period. That is because the whole cut is the lowest point. This is a 3-year old tree. See, it did not develop roots to fill the perimeter of the cambium line. Once the cambium callus turns into wood it would no develop anymore roots. By the way, by understanding what makes these plants tick I am able to defeat this natural tendency of plumerias and I can make them grow roots at will from the side of the bark. Lots of roots and roots that uptake nutrients like in the picture below. I can quadruple the number of roots on a plumeria (more vigorous plants and better stability). I will show these results in a future PSA article. If you really have any evidence that an angle-cut plumeria develops roots to fill the whole cut please post them. And do not just show me a slight angle that is almost square. Show me a 45 or 30 degree cut develop roots throughout the whole cut. I challenged a lot of people over time to do that. Is a plumeria the same as a Ti plant? Mine looks like the picture here, but has never bloomed. A friend gave it to me several years ago in the form of a little log & said to keep it dormant for the winter, then plant it in spring. Since the first time I planted it, I've kept it in the pot & it does go dormant for winter. it never gets but about 3 ft. tall. I guess I should put it in the ground for the growing season, huh?

Love the Hawaii pictures, especially of Waikiki beach. When we were a young family we would travel to Hawaii on a whim, it was so easy then. Just book a flight and make reservations. We started out on Waikiki beach, The Hillton's Rainbow Towers, the kids loved it and after a few days, we moved on to Mauii, way away from the tourist areas. Just having fun in the surf and sand. Fond memories.

Adele, I'll try to make this quick. Soil: fast draining, well aerated, quick drying. For rooting, 50% perlite or vermiculite and 50% coir (can eventually be replaced with cactus soil - not sure.) For planting, same qualities as above. Search this forum for "gritty mix". Water once when you plant the cuttings and do not water again till you see plenty of roots in your clear plastic bottles. Rooting hormones are not necessary - per se. Can be good, but many people found no difference. Personally, I use Clonex gel every once in a while. Especially on tough to root varieties. You definitely won't have to wait one year to see a leaf. You better not. Ha! Cuttings of decent quality should root in 6-8 weeks, some take longer, but you definitely should see growth. Flowers is a different story. Being in zone 5a myself; I can say that you eventually have to wait longer than two seasons to see blooms, but two seasons is a good time frame - do not expect too much and maybe they will surprise you. As for the rocks in the pots, many people use larger pebbles to weigh down their pots, so they won't get blown over. Additionally, the rocks collect heat over the day and release it over night, which is nice but these rocks can get pretty hot too and burn the base of your cuttings. I'd be careful. My plumeria go outside when night time lows are above 45F, usually around late April/May. They are out till the end of Sept./sometimes well into October. I watch for the same night time lows there. They should get as much sun as possible. Hope this clears some of your questions. Happy rooting and growing!

I don't know the name on any of them, could only guess some of them, for example the 3rd and 4th pictures I think were Kaneohe Sunburst because I picked up the blooms from the ground and got a close look at them.
The 1st picture was taken in a neighborhood we were just driving around to admire the trees and I was blown away by the color.
From the 5th picture on, they're from the Dean Conklin Plumeria Grove.

As far as the first ine a name? I just got back from the North Shore yesterday. This variety, what ever the name is all over on the north shore, it is a shame, they don't know the names, no need to fertilize. They just cut them off and plant new ones, ignore and they get HUGE. Perfect setting for plumerias. No plumeria societies. So sad. But so beautiful to see them everywhere, the Singapore Whites get so big, they just cut the branches off, standing about 5' tall, with new leave and inflos popping out of a 1" trunk! Crazy! Hello Everyone...

Sunseeker....Beautiful pictures!!

I love all of the colors...great pics!!

Those trunks are huge...I did get to see some large trunks when i was out in Costa Mesa... Never had seen trunks that large before!!

One tree that comes to mind..Psycho and the Guillots Sunset (California Sally too!) Trunks were the size of live Oaks here on the East Coast..lol...Unbelievable..

I'm glad you had a great visit in Hawaii!!

Conversation with hubby yesterday as I show him sunseeker's pics:

I say,"Honey, look at what we could see in Hawaii!"
"Wow. Those are beautiful--what are they?"
"Plumerias," I say.
"Really?! They get that big?!" he says, nervously glancing at my growing collection of sticks in the garden. "Do they ever use those for leis?"
I say with exasperation, "YES. Plumeria ARE lei flowers. Do you even hear me when I talk about plants?" (eye roll)

...and this is why I need to find some plumeria friends to form a club--LOL!!

Hi Jennifer and Laura, I may have some good news: My husband told me he wants to apply for a new job (same company) and part of his new territory would be Hawaii! He would "have to" go there 2 or 3 times a year. And where is the problem in this? My one and only question: can the wife go?

Soory it took me so long to respond guys, but today was move-out day at our son's university and it was a zoo...
Jen, my husband is a sales rep, but it's not a done deal yet. I hope, I didn't jump the gun. But sunseeker, you are so right, I was sooo excited. I love Hawaii anyway and was already dreaming about where to go and what I would want to buy (yes, I've been reading other posts and collecting info). Keep your fingers crossed for me.
In the meantime, I'll have to go to Germany first (5-26 to 6-19). Don't get too excited about that - I'm going to help my mom ...

Then we can really get into another frenzy!!! LOL...

Love all of the pics from Hawaii...those blooms are just beautiful...AWWW.....to smell them now!!! Then to watch the sunset over the Pacific....what a day!!!
