Is it too late for me to plant in the ground?

Its pretty late in the growing season, and I am considering attempting to weather over a trachycarpus fortunei. I have a three gallon specimen that is a candidate for making the voyage. I could easily bring this palm inside for the winter, but I really want to have the experience of over wintering a palm under my belt, and I would rather have an established palm in the ground than in a pot. I have a couple of questions.

1)Is it just too late to be considering this? Have I just waited too long, and should I just wait until next Spring, or will the trachy get established in the ground enough by the time it starts getting really cold?

2) Is this trachy too small? I have heard that it is better to over winter larger palms since they can be more cold tolerant.

Thanks in advance for all your answers! =]
