clear and yellow new growth on hot lemon pepper

I just gave all my babies a drink of some nutrients for the first time yesterday and today a lot of my plants are showing strange clear/yellow new growth. its exceptionally bad on the lemon peppers. Ive attached a photo as well. Thanks a ton! I have no idea what is causing this!

any ideas? im thinking it might be a N toxicity or overwater maybe a combo of the both.

Tyle6 what type of soil are you using? How old are the seedlings? Also the plant does not look bad at all. How often do you water?

This issue was hotly debated here about a year ago. If I remember correctly (I'm on another computer so access is limited) the stock that was destroyed as carriers were from two of the three major CA nurseries. The third was certified virus-free. Stock from other states, such as Texas and Florida, was unaffected. Where I live there are a lot of the original Meyers still around. The East Bay was still mostly small homes (on what is today large urban lots) and rural farms until the late 1960's; the Warren Freeway section of Hwy 580 was not completed until the mid-1970's. I don't see any reason why a Meyer wouldn't live 50-75 yrs if properly fed (and that's a big IF, most people don't feed their Meyers as much as they should). The older citrus trees in our area were all planted in the 1930's and 1940's, and are still going like gangbusters today. One of my co-workers who lived in Concord in the mid-1990's had a home in a former orchard-turned-development, and said there were Meyer trees all over her area. The trees bore great big gorgeous lemons year-round. A neighbor across the street from her, who was born and raised in one of the original tiny cottages circa 1920, said she remembered when the Meyer orchard was planted in the 1930's, and watched as the owner sold off the land to developers in the 1970's and most of the trees were bulldozed.

Hummmm I wouldn't waste any Foliage Pro on inground trees, or plants for that matter, since it can be quite expensive.. I was thinking..Since you already put fertilizer into the ground and used epsom salts, why don't you just see what your tree does over a few weeks and give it a chnace to adjust? No? As long as you are not loosing branches, then maybe it will drop all of those leaves, and come back with fresh growth. Also, maybe you can find out what many local nurseries use that sell citrus or see what they suggest for inground trees since there can be many great fertilizers that cater to inground ones with many minors. I was curious. Why would you amend the soil in the hole? Many friends I know say their citrus do just fine in their native clay soil . In fact, not as good if a hole is dug and back filled with amended soil. They say the roots tend to grow healthier and stronger through out their native soils than through an amended one just for the roots to end up against a wall into the native one. If a plant has yellow leaves, usually the first thing that comes to my mind is stress induced issues and not the fertilizer after a transplanting in fall and winter months. Have you checked the pH of the soil and givin the tree time to adjust, at least for a few months, before adding all the fertilizers and amendments? I would be careful with over fertilizing while your tree is still in an adjustment period. I am not an expert on inground trees although I do have a few at my home on the Islands, but many of my friends just stick them in the native soil and do not fertilize for weeks until they see new growth. Thanks norwoodn. You motivated me to read up on the 5-1-1 and gritty mix here on gardenweb (there's a lot to read). Ended up repotting with a 5-1-1 based on "micro" bark (the "fines" were pretty chunky at the local garden store). When I went to repot, the old soil was so dense and soggy, a lot of the lower roots just tore off. So I guess that counts as repotting/root pruning. Now I have it recovering in the shade, we'll see if it can rebound.

Careful, you could have a ticking time bomb if after a few weeks or months in jars, they could still get botulism. Do you mean with this recipe, Ken or in general if sub lemon juice for vinegar? In this recipe, if the total amount of low acid ingredients is kept the same and the full amount of acid is used (3 c) it will be safe. More safe than even the recipe if lemon juice is subbed for the vinegar as it is higher acid. But the flavor does become a concern - it may have a real pucker factor. ;) You may want to try 1 1/2 c vinegar and 1 1/2 c lemon juice for less pucker. And cider vinegar will give it a softer, milder taste than white vinegar but will darken the product some. In future, can I assume I would always be able to substitute equal amounts of lemon juice for vinegar in recipes? 2 different issues: as far as acidity issues, yes you can always sub equal amounts of bottled lemon or bottled lime juice (never fresh) for vinegar as both lemon and lime are more acid than vinegar. The reverse is NOT true - you cannot safely sub vinegar for lemon juice so if lemon juice is called for do NOT change it to vinegar. But the other issue is the flavor of the end product. Some things that call for vinegar would 'gag a maggot' if lemon juice was substituted. ;) Dave

this batch is in a mixture of promix for containers, which is basically BX with water retention gel and a stronger starter charge of nutrients, the ones in the BX are seeming to be doing much better. Aside from the new growth on these being some what transparent they are in top shape. they are 5 weeks old, seem to be a really slow grower as compared to some other varieties I have. Super chilies for example are over twice the size and started a week later. I water approx. once a week with this soil due to that moisture gel really holding onto the water.
I will post more pics later of the rest of the plants for comparison.Thanks for the the response.

Your seedling reminds me my yellow ghost seedling. I had the same problem, I could not find exactly what happened to my seedling. I considered it would be soil related problems such as lack of nutrients in the soil. When the soil is too dry and the seedlings cannot get the needed nutrients for its growth.

I have the same exact problem and cant figure out what to do. My Naga Viper plants have yellow in the SAME SPOTS as yours but maybe a little worse, have yours gotten cured yet?

If that hot lemon is the Baccatum variety, and not a Chinense, then i would consider it normal for the new growth to have a yellow hue.

But even if it's not normal, i notice with Baccatums that the new growth greens up within a week.

My aji habaneros have similar issues, only much worse, the upper leaves are fluorescent yellow. Aji habanero is a baccatum variety, and that is a very common occurrence for them apparently. They need a lot more nitrogen that my other peppers, i managed to get them to green up by loading them up with foliar feed, but after transplanting they went back to fluorescent yellow. I guess i'll try with foliar fert again.
Your peppers don't look that bad, new leaves are often lighter in color especially if the plant is going into a growth spurt (possible after a sudden influx of nutrients). If it gets worse i suggest giving it a bit more N and seeing how it reacts.
