Suggestions for selling a 10 foot Plumeria

Well, believe it or not, I have nurtured my little Plumeria cutting for about 15 years and now the little guy is about 10 feet tall. Unfortunately, he's just a little too big for me to keep around anymore and I'm thinking about selling him off.

I know that many people sell on Ebay, but was curious if there were any other suggestions from anyone. Clearly, it cannot be shipped, so it would have to be picked-up by someone near to where I live (Chicago area).

The other issue that I have is that I don't have the slightest idea what specific variety I have. White flowers that are very delicate with a slight bit of yellow in the center. Great fragance, but that's all I know about it. I got the cutting in Sarasota years ago.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

I'm impressed. I'd have a hard time parting with a plant that I'd nurtured for that long. I hope you take a cutting before you get rid of it. Have you heard of Craigslist? It's online classified ads. There are local chapters all over the country. Here's a link for the Chicago area.

We have sold things on Ebay that we could not ship (or were not willing to go to the trouble). We state clearly in the item description that it must be picked up locally. We have not had any trouble selling that way. We had one family drive to Houston from Florida to pick up an item. Good luck!

to add to Kanielak, in 9 or less zones, it is better to wait to plant broken pieces or cuttings until spring to late spring. Branches kept cool but not cold will keep for over 6 monthes. Depending on your zone and climate, leaves will yellow and drop into the fall. Lower zones will often get deadly fall frosts so plumeria growers anticipate this and cut off the leaves to force dormancy and then bring the plants in before the frost period arrives. I can now say I have made the pilgrimmage to Harry's and what an absolutely fabulous spot he has created. Even this late in the fall, the place looks stunning. Thanks again for sharing your time Harry. We enjoyed some Ross Sapote which exceeds the canistel in texture by a substantial margin. Unfortunately the seed saved was discarded by accident but alas, we'll work on getting some more. I also was able to visit Fairchild and the Fruit and Spice Park on the same trip. F&S was looking very good. Managed to get seed from a queen guava, cinnamon apple (sapote family) and ice cream bean. Mamey sapotes found onthe ground were not ripe. Sapodilla trees were loaded but not ready. With their "you can eat it if it has fallen to the ground policy" in place, much things become impossible. By the time a jackfruit falls to the ground it would seem to be gone too far. Longan were all over the ground but finding one that was edible was next to impossible. I bought some black sapotes from Fairchild 2 weeks ago but they failed to ripen before we left so still haven't tasted that one... All in all it was a great experience.

You passed on a specimen whose carcass you might have been digging out of the ground this week, when the record rains of early summer killed it. As I'm always saying, at least hundreds, probably thousands, of (expensive, usually) monkey puzzles have been planted by gardeners along the east coast since the 60s and before, and yet we hardly know of many mature specimens. I can't remember if you are on LI or in NJ, but either place should have plenty of mature specimens - as they do of other desirable, sufficiently-hardy collectibles of the 20th century like Sequoiadendron. Just in my random existence, not even involving contact with collectors of rare plants, I know of one in the neighborhood in Columbia, MD, where I briefly lived in the mid 2000s that was killed off by a wet spell one summer. I never even spoke to the person who owned it, I just noticed it prominently planted in their yard. It was 8' tall and had probably been there a few years, looked established and healthy one year but was gone the next. I once found a primary source/gardening journal in google books from the 1920s attesting to their difficulty in CONUS non-maritime climates! Specifically on Long Island IIRC. It's pretty clear that in places with cool summers to their liking, winters are too cold, and where winters are sufficiently mild, summers are too hot. The one at Polly Hill Arboretum has supposedly died back a few times, to the trunk. (that's just what their website once said about it: seems a bit implausible to me but the take home message is: was probably planted decades ago, yet is not a mature specimen even in that somewhat benign climate. NB the Fairweather guys claimed to have found a huge Austrocendrus on Cape Cod or the islands, which would have been the only one of the east coast) The known US east coast ones over 25' are: The Barnes Arboretum (who also had the horticultural savvy to bring the northernmost Sequoia on the east coast to maturity: the key for both probably just leaving them alone and not "feeding" them), the one in Bethesda MD that survived <<0F in 1994, and one at an old estate in Wilmington, DE, that was cut down for "not looking English enough." (the best of all possible anecdotes concerning the overall idiocy of most people who practice so-called "landscape architecture" in this country)

Try one of the garden centers in Chicago -- either Gethsemane or Jamaican Gardens. I agree with Karyn, you should take a cutting. However, if you take enough cuttings, you might have a shorter tree and so be able to keep the main tree and sell the cuttings. The cuttings will be easier to ship.

It may not be necessary to get rid of you plant. Some people unpot their plumeria every fall and stack them in storage for the winter. In the spring, they pot them up again and are good to go.

There is a man in Kansas City named Scott who has a forest of plumeria as tall or taller than your plant that he stores every winter and puts out in his yard every year. You probably have the largest plumeria in Chicago and I would look at all options before getting rid of such a prize possession.

I agree with the most of everyone's suggestion. Cut it back this fall, if blooms are not a problem cut it now. Save the main trunk an it will bush out.
Rather than grow upward. Sell the cuttings 24 in. cuttings go for around $15-20.00 with $5. dollars added for each tip. But your decision is all that really matters. Good luck in whatever you decide.

I do have one question though... What size container did you grow that 10 ft. in ?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Still unsure as to what I am going to do, but you've given me lots of things to consider.

Harriel....it has been in a 20" by 20" round, plastic pot for the past 5 years. I think it's got to be completely rootbound, but it seems to thrive anyway. It sucks up water like a sponge during the warm summer months, but I believe that is because there isn't much soil to hold moisture. This poor lad needs a better home.

well i think you should sell it very expensive. around $500-$1000. the reason why i think so much is because for the past few days i have looking online at plumeria nurseries and a lot of them and like 7 gallon plants for $500. here is the website i got that off of. you should look at all of the plumerias on here. there are a ton of white and yellow ones too. i think this will help you decide.
