Is this a new home to you, or a brand new home, just built?

But the answer to your question is: yes, there is a disease (not so new) that affects red and live oaks in your area. Call your extension office for information and guidance.

Yes, it is a newly built home. It just seems strange that it seems to have affected it overnight. Does anyone else know about it, fixing it, or curing it?

All plants are susceptible to a disease or insect infection. My first thought is environmental. How have you be watering? Newly planted tree should be watered every second day with 2-3 gallons of water. Increase the daily interval by one day for each week until you reach one wk. intervals. Continue this weekly watering, using 5 gals. of water, through the second year. It is the QUANTITY of water not the frequency of watering that counts.

I, too, think it may be a water issue. Depending on the tree size and your soil conditions you may have to tweak petzold6596's watering schedule. Make sure the water gets into the rootball by watering right by the trunk. Were the trees balled and burlaped? If so, was the burlap removed, or, if not, is any showing? Are the trees mulched?

With newly planted trees watering is always the issue, but whether the trees were properly planted could also be an issue. If the trees were pot bound when planted all the watering you could do will not do anything to help becasue the roots are just circling around and cannot find either the moisture or the nutrients they need. But even at that if the trees were not properly watered after being planted they will not survive.

Are you relying on an irrigation system to water your trees? If so, that could add to the problem, too. Are these trees container grown or field dug (B&B)?

I have four trees altogether. They are all about six months old, and the other three trees are doing fine. I don't know if they were container grown or pot bound. They were planted in the yard right before we closed on the house. We had a hard rain yesterday that lasted only about a half hour and it blew almost all the leaves off. Some of the leaves are still green in the center but brown on the edges. I don't know what to do about it.

For some reason that single plant is suffering from lack of water. Investigate and correct the problem. If corrected, the tree will survive. Follow my watering suggestions (above) and don't forget to water during the winter if it is a dry one.

Actually, there is no way for us to tell if this is a lack of water issue or something else. Only you can do that by investigating the soil moisture. The exact symptoms can also be caused by excess moisture or even planting too deeply. I've seen trees planted with so much organic matter that they end up floating in a peaty bathtub for days at a time.

It would be typical, too, for a tree that is chronically soggy to show these symptoms once the temperatures climb....just as if they were dying of thirst. Which, actually, they would be since the roots are all rotted.

How large is the tree in question? Does it have a good mulch bed around it? Or has it been hit repeatedly by the lawnmower or weed-eater? Can you see any insects crawling on the leaves, twigs, or bark? Do you see any unusual substance on the leaves that are falling?

If you hired the service yourself to plant the trees, you might call them back, so at least they have a chance to intervene before it dies, if it's going to. You might then expect that they replace it, given that it died so quickly. If the builder hired them, I'd call him and ask if he can send them out to take a look.

If the tree is still worth saving, a certified arborist might be able to tell you right off what's wrong.
