When can I move my peppers outside

Hi All,

I have about 7 varieties of hot peppers that have been growing for 3-4 weeks. They are not very big - some only have 1 pair of true leaves. When is it safe to put them outside. I live in Atlanta, GA - the weather has been in the 70's and 80's recently.

Hi Dave,
I also live in Atlanta, If they arent directly sown to the garden then I would wait for at least 2 true sets of leaves,and harden them slowly.I can harden plants in about 4 days, but you have to be very careful not to burn them.Good luck!You can email me if you have any Atl specific questions.

I agree with Kevin....if youre planting them directly in the ground, I would definitely hard them off, and let them get a little bigger...more than 2 set of leaves.

Put them outside for an hour or two, increasing it by an hour or two each day, after about....ehhh....maybe another 2 weeks or so.....they should be big enough to go in the ground.

I say do it now while we are in the growing season. It will give them time to get established before winter. But Gardenguy is right, you can move them just about any time

Hmm, well, I have some experience with Gunnera and have done some reading on the subject, but I wouldn't call myself an expert. I've never contained one like that...would think it would be considerably smaller than having free roam in the ground...perhaps 3' (I've seen manicata in my zone at 12' tall with 5' wide leave) wide leaves max, well fed and watered. This is a guess. Someone else here might be more helpful.

Kate99, I'm in the same boat you are. I've got some orientals called Snow Queen They are in full bloom right now and look beautiful. I think I'm going to cut off the blooms so it can start feeding the bulbs and protect them as long as I can from freezing until they die down. I think it would be better to move them in the spring. I've also got the same problem with my Northern Sensation that is 5' high and just beginning to bloom. I'd rather protect them as long as I can so the bulbs get stronger and move them in the spring. All of them have to be gradually hardened off before you move them outside, but it depends on what you have as to when you start that process. You could probably get away with hardening off snapdragons, poppies, lettuce, and bachelor buttons and get them outside for good within the next couple of weeks. Zinnias, cosmos, marigolds and tomatoes, I would harden off beginning in early May, and set them out mid-May. They are quite frost sensitive and a late season frost could kill them easily. Peppers and basil don't flourish until June anyway, so there's not really much point in hardening them off too early, other than to get them out of the house. If you harden these 6 off early (and others possibly too, but I don't know what you've got), you'll have to keep one eye on the forecast all the time and either bring them back in on frost nights or throw a frost blanket over them. I am also in North Fulton area.
Right now there is no need to cold-harden anything. But maybe
they need to adjust for sun. Therefore, acclimate your pepper by steadily increasing their exposure to sun. Then transplant them.
Some of my peppers have been planted since second week of April. some have flowers on them already.
