Help White Foam coming out of my Oak Tree!!!

We just noticed last week that there was this white foam coming out of our oak tree about a foot above where the mulch is. From far away I thought it was bird poop but when I got closer, I touched it, and obviously it wasn't. Since we have noticed it there, there has been two other areas that have had foam coming out but have since dried up, but this first area is still the same. The foam is sweet smelling and the bugs seem to like it. I hope someone knows what it might be or can give me some type of direction. I appreciate any information!!

Yep. Nothing you can do but keep your plant as happy as possible. I see that you have a mulch layer down. Make sure that chips are NOT piled up against the trunk but are spread in as wide an area as possible over the root system (which is actually well beyond the drip line). Keep the plant well watered during periods of drought, too.

Plants can actually live with this systemic disorder for a long time and not succumb until stress kicks in. Heat and drought can be a problem.

Call in your local Cooperative Extension - they will probably come look at it for free. Especially if it can be Sudden Oak Death. This is NO JOKE!!! Please, don't rely on any ordinary arborist - call in the local Extension because they will record it and then take steps to control the spread. Sudden Oak Death has no cure - it spreads via the air and water. Right now it is mostly on the West Coast, but if it HAS arrived in Virginia, then we have a serious problem. It can wipe out entire forests! It also kills Rhododendrons. It is similar to the Potato Blight that hit Ireland.

the paint won't be that deep, it will wear off in a year or so. if you want it quicker than that, use a wire brush to LIGHTLY wipe it off. the bark will recover shortly as long as you don't grind down to teh meat. as far as protecting the roots, you should have them move the stuff from under the tree and rope it off to prevent possible damage. i doubt it is hurt yet, those oaks have a strong root system. the one at my dad's house was used for shade tree mechanicing(wear do you think that expression comes from) for many years. it had everything from light cars/trucks to bulldozers parked under it, sometimes several at once. never hurt it. once an oak gets it's roots established and reaches maturity, you won't kill them by just placing stuff on and driving over the roots unless you are cutting a bunch of the roots.

It's always tempting with any plant, not just trees, to buy the biggest one which often is a plant left over from last year. I've made that mistake more than once. The advice is to buy the current years offerings to avoid the root bound problem. Sometimes the older root bound plant will grow and thrive, especially if you loosen the roots, but not always. I bought a couple of large Mediterranean palms in 4 or 5 gal. pots for $10 each once and thought I got a bargain. Inside the pots it was just a mass of roots. I loosened them the best I could although the roots were very stiff, and nursed them along for two or three years and the darn things just sulked and never would grow. Oh well, we learn from our mistakes.

mark_rachel, that is what I told my husband! And, Oak & Board, I've been studying this off and on for at least a year. You are one of my favorite commentors. I have learned a lot from you. Both of the samples are solid hardwood not engineered. KD is pleased with the quality of the floor and barely there bevel. Haven't seen a white oak floor yet in Michigan. Well aware of matching existing flooring of which we have none. Need a little more visual interest than the white oak. Considered natural hickory and I think it is too much for me. In my area, everyone is used to red oak. Boring Detroit area suburbs. Not a high end home.

Sounds like tree sap if it's sweet smelling. If it were a bacterial ooze it would smell rather foul.
Possible you may have some type of borer or other critter attacking the tree which caused a wound allowing sap to flow.
Another possibility could be Oak Wilt (a vascular disease)...the fungus produces a sweet smelling sap that attracts sap-feeding beetles and other bugs, squirrels, etc. Then these beetles/creatures pass the infection on to healthy trees to feed on sap from un-infected wounds. The disease does spread in Nebraska.

Much more likely to be bacterial wetwood (also called slime flux). There are different kinds of bacteria that will colonize within trees, and some of them are more likely to produce a 'flux' that is fermented and yeasty. Many people describe the smell as sweet or even like beer! Insects will be attracted to this like crazy!

What is the over all condition of the tree? Stand back and look at the canopy from a distance.

Well, that is a good question. Our tree is on the East side of the house and it seems to be growing crooked towards the north. It seems to loose it's leaves last compared to the other trees in the neighborhood, and the leaves come in last in the spring. I'm not sure if I answered the question or what else I could describe about the tree. Here is a picture if it helps.

I got a question too... i have a tree stump with white foam coming out of it and it seems to be migrating to my lawn(which is quite far from the stump. I have tons of little ants too. I am very very new to this whole garden thing(we just bought the house) and i am worried this may be a bigger problem then i know.. PLease help me too ..HOW CAN I GET RID OF IT????
