Feeding once a week is too much. Once every 14 days is better so you do not have an accumulation of salts. Plumies flower according to the weather and location. In Florida and Texas they seem to bloom in early May. In Calif it seems to be more like June/July/August. Most plants will bloom by the second year but some take three or four. Seedlings can take much longer but most flower in three or four. I have logged my blooms for 4 years now and my earliest blooms are May 9 and the latest is October 14 with the majority from June 20 to August 10. Hope this helps. Bill

I usually get blooms fairly late in the summer, July - Sept. I should have some early blooms this season because I received a number of cuttings with inflos : ) I hope they bloom and root!

To add on to Bill's post. I have several colleagues that feed their plumeria weekly. BUT, they feed at 1/4 to 1/2 strength each week. Most of them are in situations where they need to water the plants at least once per week, so they put a little food in with the watering.

Others will feed with a soil fertilizer one week, and then with a foliar mix the next week. But, again, they reduce the concentration so that they do not overdue it.

I was following a schedule that was posted on Plumeria101.com which said feed it weekly, but after looking at other sites, I think that is too much. It hasn't hurt my plant though. I also found out it can take up to 3 years to flower like tdogdad said.
Guess now I just have to learn to be patient :)

Ah yes. Patience. Very important with plumeria. Whether it is rooting a cutting, waiting for an inflo, or waiting for an inflo to open, plumeria go at their own speed no matter what we want or try to do. Sigh! :)

I'm still a novice at plumerias but i live in your zone. My experience with them is to keep them in full sun as much as possible. I have them scatter around my yard an the ones that seem to bloom first. Get almost all day sun, an then the others varieds thru out the summer. but I must say the one's getting half day's sun normally hold their color longer. do not then to fade as quickly as full sun ones. IMHO

harriel, do you have them in pots or in the ground?
Mine is in a pot and it gets sun from about 7am until 1pm. After that its TOO hot here and I'm afraid it will cook the plant, literally.
Right now, mid May, its 95 degrees during the afternoon. In the heat of the summer its consistantly 105 or hotter everyday.
Just how much heat/sun can Plumerias handle?
Maybe I'll try moving it out from the patio juuuuust a little bit. Sun until 2 pm?

Plumeria canÂt stay in the ground all year in zone 8a. As far as sun goes, they can take intense heat and sunlight. However as harriel pointed out, the flowers will fade faster if they are in full sun all day. Plumeria will slow down their growth if their temperature reaches 100 degrees or more, so you should arrange for them to be protected from direct sun during the hottest part of the day. They should have at least six hours of full sun per day or longer exposure to lightly filtered sunlight. The trick becomes finding the ideal balance between the amount of sunlight needed for a healthy plant and best flower keeping quality.
