Anyone use just net pots for dutch bucket drip systems?

Hi all, I'm getting the parts ready for the outdoor hydro system and this year I'll be using mostly dutch buckets or a variation of them but they are basically the same. A bucket with a drain that is full of Hydroton and drippers to add nutes.

I have several plants that have been in DWC tanks over the winter. They are in 8 and 10" net pots and I am wondering if anyone has successfully used just a net pot in a dutch bucket system. It would save a ton of hydroton by only filling the net pot. My concern is obviously that the roots will dry out, but I was thinking that if the drip timer was on for 15 min every hour or so, that should keep the roots moist? I think...
