Thanks. I called JJ's and he told me that they are indeed very similar, but from the growers that he has talked to that have both, they are not the same. I was just hoping one of the forum members had both and could tell me what the differences are.

Well, I don't have too many since the move, but they are doing fine. Divine and Penang Peach are leafed out with inflos. The rest seem to be lagging behind.

Hey Tony,
I have both and there are some differences.
Jungle Jack is the originator of California Sunset as it is his seedling.
Most all of Jacks of Jungle Jacks seedlings are from Penang Peach thus the similarities.
Jack originally started with 10 acres of land in Thailand where he planted it with all his seedlings, once he planted the 10 acres he than purchased another 10 acres and planted that one with seedligs. Currently Jack has 40 acres of his seedlings. Jack sorts through his Plumeria groves and if there are seedlings that are unsatisfactory he gets rid of them and keeps and sells the ones that are outstanding.
Jack's criteria for selling plumeria are Growth Habbit, Flowering Habit, Flower.

On Junlge Jack plumerias you will notice that they usually are not leggy, they have good flowering habits and GORGEOUS blooms.

Thanks for the background. That is really interesting information. JJ's sounds like it has the exact type of Plumeria that I am interested in. When I first started growing these beautiful things, I never took into consideration growth and flowering habits. Now, that is what I consider first and foremost.

Question: Many of JJ's plants look similar to others. For instance, Im wondering about the difference between JL's Dane and and his Jackie. I read here that JJ's has mainly seedlings. So I'm assuming he makes up the names for his seedlings? Are his names and seedlings registered? This gets confusing to me.

As with most of the Thai sellers they do not register their seedlings or plumies. Part of the problem is there is no registration process in Thailand and unless the grower in Thailand had an agent here in the US representing them they would not bother to register their plumies with the PSA.
I believe that JJ is going to register his plumies.
His son John would do it for him, but I think it would only be the be the varities he carries here in the US.
John brings back new cultivars several times a year when he goes to Thailand to visit his dad.

Again if I heard John correctly all his dads seedlings have come from Penang Peach, and he only brings back a very small, small, small percentage of his fathers varieties to the US. Luc and Carol from Florida Colors told me that they have been to Jacks farm in Thailand 2 x already and spent couple of days there as his guest.
Carol said that he has soooo many gorgeous cultivars that he has yet to even decided if he will ever sell them.

That is why you will see soo many similarites in his plumierias. The other issue is that JJ said that there are a lot of people who steal from him, its hard to patrol 40 acres. I was told by John that his father fired to of his employees that worked on his plumie groves because he caught them stealing and selling plants on EBAY.
If you have ever been on Ebay to check out the Plumies for sale you will notice that even in the US there are some people who rename plumerias like Evelyn. In Thailand some of the people that sell Thai Plumerias will make up a name and sell plumerias on Ebay even if it already has an official name, just a lazy sell that wont even bother to do some research.

Thanks Freak. That explains most of it, but I'm still curious to know if Dane and Jackie are the same plant. From pictures, Jackie looks smaller, but the same. I've wanted a Dane for a long time and then saw his Jackie but questions arose:) Dane sells for mega bucks and he's offering Jackie for $50. Is Jackie a dwarf? I did email and ask some questions (like is it multi-branched etc), got a response that he'd check and get back to me, but never did. So, curiousity is still killing me :)

I will ask John for you. John was going to Thailand two or three weeks ago so I do not know if he is back yet.
I will call him and try to find out. I have an arranged field trip with several plumie friends of mine to his house in Oceanside(this is where is keeps his primo plumies), so if I cant get a hold of him before the field trip I will ask him when we get there since we also have a luncheon with him after the field trip.

If anyone saw JL's book when it first came out in 2006 you would see a lot of plumerias like Tidal Wave, Metallica etc, that had been sold on Ebay for top dollar in the previous years. Than in about 2007 Thai sellers started popping up like wild fire on Ebay and they were introducing all these fabulous unheard Thai named varieties but when you looked the a lot of the Thai cultivars were the same ones that Jim Little was selling. Tidal Wave was one that they still sell on Ebay under a Thai name.
So even though JL is very legit there was some issue with the discrapencies. In JL's book he lists many Thai Varieties as his seedlings and releases. If you go through his pictures in his books and Ebay Thai sellers pictures you will find many of the same flowers but with Thai names.

So Dane could be Jackie, if you check out Plumeria Addiction.com Dane on that site is from Thailand and is a Jackie.
So LoveF go figure.
