Does anyone have the true Hoya gigas?
Comments (6)David Liddle did have a new eriostemma he claimed to be the real gigas. Of course this is like finding the rare sasquatch or abomidable snowman. Original botanists described this most unique hoya with flowers large like saucers. The one listed in most catalogs is not the true gigas, but at the time I threw the towel in, there have been two collections which did possess a plant they claim to be the real deal. I was just curious if anyone has ever seen or touched this plant. Not that anyone would want this in their home, but it does pose special potentials for breeding with it....See MoreCaryota Gigas help
Comments (9)Thanks for the tips and the link. I actually spoke to the guy from Jungle Music yesterday...he is about 3 miles from me. It's his website you sent the link from. He said the tree has about a 50/50 chance of making it. He agreed with you both and said it is most likely a problem of shock due to transplant from a field to a box to my yard. He suggested giving it a couple of months or seeing if my nursery will honor the tree and replace it....See MoreWhat species of Caryota is this?
Comments (2)not gigas... could be urens or maxima. Most are considering ochlandra to be a synonym now, but if it weren't that would be my first guess. C urens has historically been commonly sold in groups of three or four for use as indoor palms and sometimes even labeled as C mitis....See MoreAnyone with experience growing Caryota King Kong (Fishtail Palm?)
Comments (2)hi,have never heard of them having weak root systems, and therefore, the part about planting close to the house, would not make sense[as only invasive rooted plants, should not be planted close to foundations] they are all over los angeles, and grow pretty fast, and get HUGE,so plan accordingly! we get VERY strong winds in the winter, and NEVER have i seen these palms move!!...See Moretropicbreezent
