Know of any truly mild Jalapenos? Best tasting superhots?

My girlfriend likes the flavor of Jalapenos, but not the hotness, and I found a supposedly mild Jalapeno variety last year, and tried it. It produced peppers that were absolutely no less hot then standard Jalapenos, and some seemed hotter! My Poblanos seemed to be the same hotness as these Jalapenos. Some peppers would have no heat at the top end, but huge heat at the bottom end, so I guess there is inconsistency in heat in different areas of each actual pepper, or from one pepper to another. I've not noticed that in store bought peppers before.

Is there any such thing as a milder Jalapeno?

Also, I was reading about the superhot varieties, and people here mentioned that some of them have major heat, but not necessarily good flavor. Which peppers of Scoville rating of 100,000+ taste best?

The Mild TAM or TAM MILD Jalapeno rolls in at around 1,000 scoville units and is supposed to have the distinct flavor of a jalapeno. I have never grown them but I do know they are out there...good luck!!

"Fooled You" is a no heat jalapeno and as mentioned in the previous post, "TAM Jalapeno" is a mild one. I am growing both varieties for the fist time this year. I am not sure if you would be able to find plants and may need to start these from seed. Our local Walmart had the TAM seeds.

Reviving this awesome apple thread. I was reading through what I posted and I am amused by how quickly things change. at least half of the apples I listed have fallen off my own list. I've grafted over most of my spigold because it's really not that good after all. Mutsu is also somewhat uninteresting these days. Here is my new list of favorites: - coconut crunch is extraordinary in our climate and keeps really well - sinta, fruited for the first time last Fall, delicious strong pineapple flavor - Fiesta, really good for a Summer apple - Williams pride, my tastiest Summet apple after Viking - Orin, great storage apple that still has that tropical pineapple flavor in March - alkmene, yummy summer August apple that tastes lime a cox but even better - kidds orange red, superb in the Fall - Haralson, fruits well here in California and its good - transparente de cronkels, delicious and high quality I still love gravenstein, hauer pippin and granny smith off my old list. I am curious what will stand out this year, as it surely won't be the same as last year. -

Hello, Muffy/Puffie. I have two thoughts for you. Suggestion #1: DAIKONS! I grew several varieties of Daikon radishes this past autumn. This was my first time growing them, and they've utterly amazed me. I direct sowed them in late July in fairly sandy soil. We had a lot of rain this fall here in SE Michigan, and temps have been all over the board, but overall fairly mild to cool. I grew 'April Cross' and 'Minowase'from Stokes, along with a couple of other types of Oriental radishes, but those two did the best. I've gotten these enormous radishes, up to about 18 inches long and two inches in diameter, and they are extremeley mild and very juicy and crispy. I've especially enjoyed slicing them and pickling them for a few days in vinegar. I put a fair amount of fertilizer on the beds, which I think also helped them to do so well. So, this may be one option for you. The 'April Cross' is claimed to do well as spring crop also. The only down side I can see to Daikons is that they take a lot longer to harvest than do regular radishes, about 50 to 60 days, versus three to four weeks for regular radishes. Suggestion #2: YACON. If your husband is truly looking for the crispy texture without any heat or bite to it, try growing Yacon, which is a South American root vegetable similar to a waterchestnut in texture. Flavor is sweet and mild, sort of carrot-like. This crop takes all season to grow, but it's claimed that the tubers last up to 8 months in cool storage. I grew it for the first time this year, and I really like the flavor and texture. So far, they are keeping just fine, but I only dug them about 5 weeks ago. I ordered plants from Nichols in Oregon this past spring. Seeds of Change offered the starter plants as well. Mine did really well, six plants gave me about 3/4ths of a bushel of tubers, which range in size from about 4 ounces to well over a pound, although most are in the 10 to 16 ounce range. I think you have a lot of options for getting taste out of different types of chiles.. first, if you have the patience, you can control the heat a chile imparts on a dish by wearing some gloves, and trimming out as much of the veins/seeds as you want. less heat, more chiles = more chile flavor for me its more of a matter of what to do with what types of chiles: -smaller east/south asian types of chiles are good for drying, and using for a chile paste (sambal style) or indian style cooking (fry in oil before throwing food in) -pickling (quick pickling isn't that complicated) -roasting (people pay big money for a roasted piquillo stuffed with a white cheese at a lot of restaurants) -salsas (only herbs, acidity, and chiles required) -sauces

Bruce, I baby the masses until we can get them into the ground then I attempt to baby them, but then it kicks in that I cant, although I still baby the plants in pots at the house(superhots) next year Ive got planned around 49 different peppers(some are just differnt colors) about 2300 plants I think Ill have 50 "superhots' in pots and I plan on doing a row of bhuts(50 plants) I also started looking at a few studies and realized I have my plants spaced to far, we do 18 inches but Im moving it two 12 next year as well as doing double offset rows so I can put a few more plants in the same spacing and were putting plastic mulches down to help with the weeds, this year I joke its just a weed patch with veg in the middle(we dont spray chemicals at all) Tomatoes are our other big crop, the one in the photo above has a nice smokey flavor, they can get up to two pounds, I love having 1 slice of tomato fill the whole bun... -Chris

Don't trust Tam's, they are very schizophrenic. Some have almost no heat, and others are as hot as a regular Jalapeno. They do have good flavor, but my husband no longer trusts me (if he ever did) after I gave him one last year and said they had very very little heat and it ended up to be a pretty hot one.... I'd go with fooled you, or senorita.

I forgot to mention the variety of "mild" jalapenos I tried last year, but it was Tam, and they were not any milder. They were for sale at every Lowes around here as plants.

I'll have to try "Fooled you"

Are you fixed on a Jalapeno type pepper? If not and you'd be happy with a mild heat, thick flesh and interestingly shaped pepper, then the Christmas Bell (they go by 20+ names) variety may suit your needs.

Here's a shot of one I grew a couple of years ago. Yes the plant is looking rough, it was a tough season, but it put out a good crop of peppers.

My favorite tasting hot chile of all is the hot paper lantern (I get from Johnny's seeds or Tomato Grower's). It's a form of habanero, long, pointy and red when ripe. They're very easy to grow, prolific and hot, but I no longer consider "ordinary" habaneros as super hots. I do think that they're well over 100,000 SHU though. For a milder heat, I don't think you can get a better flavor than a Hatch type like NuMex 6-4, Joe E Parker or Big Jim. The Heritage 6-4 is an old strain, rebred by the Chile Peper Institute to bring back the original flavor. They're awesome! They also not have a Heritage Big Jim. For a slightly hotter version, try the Sandia.
