I already envy your ability to go get compost - I'm in The Village on the east side of Lake Hefner up in OKC...no such municipal facility exists for me, so I just have to get it where I can!

From where did you move five years ago? Oklahoma definitely is NOT like anywhere else, that's for sure!

Welcome to the forum.

It is great you have a compost source. It is impossible to have too much compost.

As for the summer weather....well, I grew up in Texas 80 miles south of where I now live in southern OK and I've only lived there and here, and after 53 years I still am not used to the summers either. I know part of it likely is that I am getting older and the older I get, the more the heat bothers me. However, I also think the heat is getting worse.

Don't hesitate to ask questions. You'll get tons of helpful answers.

Sharon, until 2007 I was living in England so it was a big change moving to OK! Especially the heat, they are having a miserable wet summer there this year.

Paula, I live near Rock Creek and Porter. I think we looked at some houses and trailers out close to where you are at when we started house searching.

I sure do appreciate being able to get the city compost. We have started trying to make our own too. Mondays are yard waste collection in our neighborhood so we go around late on sunday night and take the grass clippings and raked leaves that people set out!

I am sure I will have lots of questions (probably some dumb ones!) and it is nice to have a place to ask them and get answers from people who know!

Welcome to GW, it is a "LiveWiki" for gardening in Oklahoma. We also live in Norman near 12th Ave NE and Tecumseh, you can see our garden from road,just apposite to Church. We moved from New England region (NH) in 2008, and still trying hard to acclimatized to the OK summer.

I have been using city compost in the last couple of years. I have landscaper who haul me a truck load when compost is really good. I am not sure you get good compost this time of the year? He usually bring early spring or late fall, those are two times composting process is completely done and looks dark and smells great. If you bring other time especially mid summer I guess it may not be good quality. However I am not sure as I not been to facility since 2010.

By the way, you are welcome to visit us anytime. This time of the year may not be good, if you come now you see mostly roasted and crispy plants :-( however you are welcome to see pics taken before temp 115.

there is NEVER anything such a "dumb question" here. Of course, it is always advised to use the "seach" option at the bottom of the page. But I have never, ever, never seen or heard of ANYONE on this forum not answering a question by a newbie or long-time member that has been asked many times over. Trust me, I did it plenty when I first joined. So just know that.

You can call the City of Norman facilty in early spring to find out what compost is ready and available. They will also tell you how long before more is ready.

Welcome Charlotte! I was transplanted here many years ago. One of my favorite things about Okla weather is our long spring and fall seasons. (And short winters!) Thankfully we are getting closer to fall.
