Pics of pumeria at the end of Winter under grow lights

I have about 25 good size pumeria under high intensity grow lights in a basement room. None of them ever go dormant. Here's 3-4 of them that I just repotted. Some of the leaf tips are burned from being too close to the grow lights. Not too bad for growing them under grow lights.

Nice papaya plants! I'd like to know about the growing conditions when they are indoors...what's the room temperature where they're growing, and how often do you water them. I've had difficulties keeping papayas alive in the winter unless I have them on heat pads and under grow lights, and there's a size limit on the table where I have the heat pad. And if I just set them next to a window (it's a cold house), they eventually develop root rot, even when I water sparingly. So I've like to know your secrets, if you'll share them. John

Very nice plants Jacklord! I am always very jealous to see the prices of tropicals in nursuries down south since they are often half the price (sometimes even less than that) than the prices they go for at nursuries here. There are a few nursuries here that have good prices on the tropical "annuals" (I wish they were not sold just as annuals!) but its hard to find good prices on the hardy subtropicals! Thanks Ben! Glad that you like the butia! I really like the variegated Alphinas, I see them all the time in Florida and in California and they are really beautiful plants. I wish I can find the variegated ones here, but Im happy that I at least found the green variety since those aren't usually found here either! The Monstera vine is going to be a potted plant for me. I wish it could grow outdoors, but its way too tropical (Tree Philodendrons might make it with protection though, I always wanted to try them in the ground, but they do well in pots so I guess its easy enough to bring them in). Monsteras are one of my favorite plants also and mine is just starting to get those nice spilt leaves so Im hoping that it will have lots of adult leaves by the end of summer! Your lucky to be able to grow philodendrons in your area, they are a great family of plants! I fogot the name of the tulips I bought, but I think they are early or mid spring bloomers. I used to not really be crazy about spring blooming plants but like you said, it takes such a long time for the tropical plants to start looking nice so the spring bulbs at least give me something to look forward to (and I dont have to give them any care which is another big plus!). Hello Everyone, Getting so excited seeing the beautiful Penang Peach!!! I love the coloration in every climate. This particular variety has so much to offer it is a must have in my book. My Penang Peach still has an inflo from this fall and is continuing to slowly grow under lights. It will be interesting to see what color it will have. K...those pictures are gorgeous!! I especially love the last "summer" picture of Penang Peach with the rain drops on it. It really is worth printing a picture of that one and setting it where everyone can see. Quite Amazing!!! Hi Dave, Love your Penang Peach!!! Knowing how close we are to each other gives me an idea what to expect from mine and i cant wait to see her bloom in the summer. I just wish it didnt push an inflo at the end of the season. What can you do? My Lavender is trying right now to form one, but i think it will stay semi dormant and hopefully continue to develope this spring. The only problem is this one needs to be root pruned badly and im so afraid of losing the inflo. This tree didnt grow much for me last summer like the others and i should have root pruned it sooner. Hi Kevin!! Beautiful blooms!!! Congratulations on another beauty of yours... I also like the T-5 lights and I have one four foot fixture that I keep upstairs and have it set for 12 on 12 off like you!!! They don't go dormant either and some of the others that I keep upstairs close to the area go semi dormant ( they all keep one eye open.. ;-). The big guys, go in the back bedroom and are put to sleep.. It's the only way... I'm so glad to hear of the seedlings blooming and I know its not uncommon for them to take that long to see inflos, but Im Always impressed with your dedication for all of the trees and different plants that you grow in Utah. I agree with Mike.. When I first saw pics of how you boxed up your palms I think it was a Windmill. ( can't remember) and how you insulated ths big tree, I was stunned.. Your yard and even the plants you have Inside your home is incredible. I hope your son is still helping you protect during the winter, Kevin. You give hope to everyone who questions if they can grow Plumeria, Palms and other tropicals with the snow capped mountains in your backyard. Impressive to say the least.. The good news about my Butias is that I think they will all make it except one that is in my front yard. I had Jordan ( remember the guys down the street from Me who I helped start the palm tree business?) they have been so helpful now that I cant climb up in my trees and cut the dead fronds down. I'm just to old for that anymore, but these guys are the best. They came when I called and asked for assistance in hurricane cutting of the Butias. It's been two weeks since they were cut back and I see green fronds starting to emerge. I'm so happy. They look funny right now, but they are alive. The Sabals made it.... Always great to see you post Kevin. Will you do me a favor? Please post a pic of the mountains and your yard so people can see how truly dedicated you are and how cold it gets where you live? Laura.... sad news about the palms. Last December when we had 20 below temperatures, the extension cord to my big Mediterranean Fan Palm and my Blue Mexican Fan Palm (Hesper Palm) was disconnected by some construction guys who were building a garage and I did not know this. Two palms were without light or heat from their usual florescent light bulbs for two weeks during the coldest part of Winter. The big Med. Palm that has been outside for 20 years was dead. The amazing thing is... the Blue Mexican Fan Palm was perfectly fine! I was shocked. So I've lost my oldest 3 outdoor palms during the past several years. But I'm planting more! This year, a Pindo Palm (Butia Capitata). Next year, another Mediterranean Fan Palm. I have two Waggie Windmill Palms growing up inside that I will plant outside eventually. And another Med. Palm. Hey, after seeing zero degrees in St. George this year, and seeing hundreds of large palm trees die, I can't complain too much. I'm not giving up!

Hi Kevin,

I'm so sorry to hear about you losses.. You have worked so hard keeping those beauties growing and keeping them tucked in and warm throughout the winters.. It's just so upsetting to know that it was the hand of another that caused this.

I have no doubt that you will continue to grow palms and be just as successful with your new beauties. Everything that you grow, does well!!!

My palms suffered this winter .. I lost one Butia and I am keeping my fingers crossed on a few others. We will see in the next few weeks. I had to hurricane cut them because of all the burn and I see green fronds on one of the three. Time will tell. The large Sabals made it through without any damage.

Your Plumeria look wonderful..
