non-invasive and low maintenance grass?
Comments (2)Oh there are so many to choose from nowadays. Check out this website, look for clumping. For low maintenace, I like Festuca glauca Blue Fescue and Helictotrichon sempervirens Blue Oat Grass. For a taller grass there is Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster'. Comments (6)went searching at the nursery today and two were mentioned to me. LIttle Bunny Dwarf Fountain Grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides) and the same latin name, but "hameln" variety. The guy begged to differ that mexican feather grass spread, so I just left and thought Id ask here and research them, and so far it sounds good!! How is it that, I suppose since I don't come in the nursery in dungarees and toting a hoe, that they assume I know nothing? Asked him a bit about Agastache and he assured me these are only available in the early spring as they are spring blooming plants. I pointed out that they are summer perennials, then when the reseeding came up, I decided to move on. but, I think he might have been right on these, they do look nice, smallish, and not spreaders. Last thing I need is another innocent looking grass (like you, little lemongrass pot) to turn into a might goliath that is attached to China! Grrr, I think the heat is getting to me!!...See Morenon-invasive grasses
Comments (6)I would have to disagree with Donn somewhat :) about a long enough growing season to set viable seed. Certainly this is true of any warm season grass, however the cool season grasses do have plenty of opportunity to reseed. I rid my yard of Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca) for that very reason. I still say (and I'm repeating myself once again) that a short season grower just can't go wrong with any of the Calamagrostis x acutiflora such as Karl Foerster, Overdam, Avalanche or Eldorado. Aside from Avalanche which I've yet to find, all are hardy in my zone 2B garden, not the least bit invasive and provide interest throughout the whole year with zero for maintenance except the spring cut. There are many grasses that are always listed as zone 5 and above that are much hardier (I've got some in my yard). If I can fill my yard with ornamental grasses then your zone 4 garden should be no problem....See MoreNon-seeding (spreading) Ornamental Grass
Comments (1)There aren't many tall ornamental grasses which will self-sow in your zone, and I can't think of a single tall purple grass for your zone. That said, there are several tall OG's which will do well for you. Check out the OG comparison chart at Bluestem.ca: http://www.bluestem.ca/grass-comparison-chart.htm...See More- 16 years ago
