That was my best Colin Clive imitation (see Frankenstien circa 1931) After weeks of wondering if my Sabal Palmettos would actually grow I have seen definate signs that they have. Slower than hell but at least they're doing something. Based on what I see the two emerging spears will have opened fully and I should get two new spears. That will be it for this summer. Maybe next summer it will do better as it will be established and in the same pot for over a year.

Are these potted?
S.palmetto probably does best if left to get pot-bound before potting-up.

There were two plants in one pot. They were beyond potbound. Roots were sticking 7 inches out of the bottom of the pot (one of those el cheepo black nursery pots. I re-pooted them as soon as I got them. My parents bought them for me when they were in St. Augustine back in April.

Hey Mark, thanks for the comments. From my side, its interesting to see what changes from year to year. Most of the same flowers bloom with sprinkles of new stuff here and there. Here is some new flowers this year. I love the colors that orchids have. The darker winter gets, the brighter the flower are. This vanda above is a first time bloomer for me. I love vandas and they really like to show off. This burnt orange color has a bold statement for the fall. I forget the name of this catt, but it has a wonderful color and smell. This flower will light up a greenhouse with its scent. Easy to grow. Phragmipediums have always been interesting to me. This one has a beautiful red color with some yellow highlights. This is what winter is all about. Anyone that knows me, knows I love cymbidiums. I have tons of these in spike that will bloom soon. I love these plants and the many flowers they grow. One day I hope to devote a whole greenhouse to the cymbidium. Just look at this yellow and dotted flower. This plant blooms 2 times a year. Its in bloom now and was in bloom back in the summer. Plants that hate the cold are giving up and just coming up now. Even the salvias that normally don't start to wake up till mid April are shooting up leaves through the 6-12 inch pile of leaves on top of them.

If you don't mind using chemicals try Bayer 24 Hour Grub Killer Plus. It kills all sorts of insects and after 24 hours it is gone. There is no residual.

We do not know the father at all. Here is some facts i know. She got pregnant after 6 months of dating him. She is a veyr pretty girl but my Dh's friend and i were wondering if she did it on purpose to make sure the guy stays.... they married, live together for another 4 years after the child was born but out of the blue...and i do mean out of the blue, he todl her straight out that he doesn't want to live his life with her and siad he's going for a divorce. We first thought..ok...family man...doesn't want it..never aksed for it in the first place..but then we thought..mmmm.. affair??? nope..no affair just wants completely out, will pay her Cs with minimum contact, no communication whatsoever. then i meet the mother...who is very intelligent. highly educated...but i noticed she wants to party and drink and mingle. so i'm thinking,,,,,neglect. Maybe this kid just doesnt' get enough attention , get ignored and maybe she was born with some sort of psychological problems. Its rare..but it does happen. I immediately picked it up the moment she stepped into my household but didn't think she would be violent. And she realized soon i was completely onto her and she didn't like it at all. So she is very aware at her age what she is doing and she purposely takes the individual or animal, isolates it before she begins her assaults...so she KNOWS. She's 5 but she knows...I think that is evil incarnated! I've read other stories as well with kids rare, but are born this way. They have to be hospitalized immediately. I read one on another forum where the daugther was given up by the mother because she was harmful to her new baby brother...then with the father and sm...she held a pillow over her baby sister! Well they all had her committed. Turned out she was a psychopath. No emotions, no empathy, cruel, maticulus and planned. EIther way, i've told my husband i never want that girl over and told his friend that she as a mother should adress these odd behaviours before someone or thing get seriously hurt.

Thank you, I knew these would be slow growers and this damn cool (topped out at 74 today and falling to the low 50s tonight) doesn't help. The long range forcast does show at least 5 strait days of 90 (Florida forum members must laugh when they here us get all exited about a few days of 90s up here). (LOL)

You know what else is funny when you go to a florida or california board and they have a "COLD HARDY" section and they talk about there so amazed and thrilled there palms survived temps in the 30's like thats mission impossible..

I like sabals but man these guys take eons to grow !
That's the only thing i don't like about them .

Sabals grow the fastest in the south where we have long, hot summers. Watering constantly is also a way to increase growth.

We don't laugh at your temps....Andy....we admire them. Today's heat index is only 105F. Yesterday's hit 109F because our dewpoint hit 79F at 90+F and this is under blue, sunny skies! Ya think the palms love this? They relish it....I've got huge Heliconia claws (upright) blooming everywhere that compliment the palms very well. But, after losing my two huge oaks to the hurricanes a few years ago, the palms just dont seem to grow fast enough to giv e me the canopy I desire! Enjoly the heat Andy...Greg in Tampa Bay

I hear what you're saying. I had a golf outing Saturday afternoon and it was sunny and 77. Totally comfortable. That's the weather you guys get in the winter. A lot of northerners who only go to Florida in the winter have no conception of how hot it gets down there in the summer. Of course my palms all grow in the high 70s but when we get a stretch for even just 3 or 4 days when it hits the 90s they just explode. I try to imagine how fast they would grow down there.

Any palms you would try to grow up here will need varying degrees of winter protection.
Sabal Minor, Needls, Trachys. I would suggest ordering the book "Palms won't Grow here and other myths". It's very detailed and will help. It may be a little late in the summer to try. Half of our Michigan growing season is over.
