Baby Trachy Wagners... Pics

I'm told these are pure trachy wagnerianus. They are really cute. I got them from a guy in southern Cal. He shipped them to me. Very reasonable too. The fronds are so small they almost look bonsai. These are not going in the ground. I'm going to re-pot them and move them inside for the winter.

I did not realize that they would split their fronds when still that small. The picture looks great.

Andy, I think these are about 3 or 4 year olds. Just very slow growers.

They are looking pretty good now. By the end of the summer I think they will be pretty close to normal. I dont think it will be able to handle another tree cut for at least a few years so they will need good protection for the next few winters. But after seeing such a will to live, I think they deserve to be a little babied for a few winters. Thanks for updating us on this! I give this method an A+ for palms that have spear pull and appear dead. It probably wont work for more tropical palms but they work fine on the tolerant ones. Good luck! -Alex

Statenislandpalm7a- yes this past winter they did stay in the ground. I cut off the elephant ears about two feet from the ground and packed pine needles around them and then covered them with a really large plastic pot to keep them dry. I did the same thing to the philodendron on a smaller scale. Honestly didn't expect it to come back but glad it did. Plus they are on the southwestern side of house. Tropicalzone7- thanks! I love stag horn ferns too. They definitely remind me of Florida. My largest on the right is in a 12 inch by 12 inch orchid basket. It gets heavier every year. But it is tiny compared to those monsters down south!

Nice Photo's Thanks for sharing. Yes it has been a bit dry lately. I think were 2" short for August so far. But then again, this does tend to be a drier part of the year. At least its nothing like the drought of a few years back! It will be interesting to see all the protection methods used ( or not at all) for the upcoming winter.

Hi guys. Jimhardy... my Abyssinian Bananas are great! I haven't brought them out of dormancy yet, but they are starting to grow anyway, so I'm going to have to do something! But last week we had a new record low for that date. It got down to 14 degrees. Global warming? Yeah, right. Not here! We've had an extremely cold Spring. I have my 3 big ones in dormancy and 3 young ones I've kept growing upstairs in the heat and light all winter, so I've got 6 that I'll plant outside this year. Williamr, I'm not sure whether or not I cooked it to death or if it froze. All I know is it's "deader than a door nail". I won't dig it up quite yet. I'm too busy to deal with it. I'm definitely having better luck growing my ensete. But I'll replant the palms or move to southern Utah where palms don't need protection. Probably both!

Those are great pics, I think they are the best looking Trachys there are. I bought one 2 years ago the exact same size you have and its doubled in size. They love full sun. If there in shade they will stop pushing up leaves. Also put them big deep pots they have large roots and I noticed they grow slower when they are in small pots. Heres a pics of ones that Ive bougt so far.

It looks like Jeff's palms in CA. Is that where you bought them? I have three, and they are the purest waggies I've seen!

I have several small waggies that I grew from seed that are now about 6 years old. They grow both smaller and than T. fortunei. Mine came from Rare Palm Seeds, and survived a low of 7 degrees this past winter with no protection other than mulch.
