Garden show with no purchases

Just returned from the Garden Show in Costa Mesa. I went with the plan to look and do not buy any new plants as I have enough. Ok I only left with a grafted Ammaron Curly White, a Thai red- Daeng Kammayee, and another Thai red/pink-Mermaid Gem. I guess this proves you can't let a plumeraholic anywhere near a great plumie bargain. Bill

When I saw the title of this thread, I was going to ask if youÂre feeling ok. IÂm glad thereÂs no cause for concern.

Neat garden this weekend. Very narrow, long space, the front half of which had been a parking space complete with swing arm garage door in the brick wall on the street. The owner was a bachelor with very little gardening experience, who was looking for a place to hang out with his friends after a night out with his friends. They replaced the door with a roll-up tambor style door, so future owners could easily convert it back to a parking space if they wanted. The took out the brick divider in the middle, then placed simple decking and brick planter boxes on the diagonal. The bulk of the money they spent was on the door and on lighting -- uplighting for the plants and down lighting for the conversation areas. They picked really nice, structural plants that were very low maintenance and cast dramatic shadows on the walls. Wasn't necessarily to my taste, but it was perfect for the owner and turned out really well. You could see how much it added to the current owners enjoyment -- and the re-sale value.

I have to say last year's show showed some growth in the right direction. Unfortunately they were not able to keep that up this year. I suspected that would be the case with the economy the way it is. The lack of displays were disappointing as were the lack of vendors about gardening. I went Thursday night and the place was empty. I always find the flower shows to be empty at night so I wasn't surprised but I think the vendors got very nervous. You could see it in their eyes. Probably the spaces are overcharged. We heard some vendors mention over $1,000. We got stuck listening to several live infomercials and hard sell speeches. What really surprised me is the lack of cards, brochures and websites. One vendor said we could have his website address after the first order but he wasn't going to be able to pay for his space by giving out brochures. What this show lacks is consistency. Many vendors don't come back again so never develop a following. I do visit Atlock every year and buy my begonia. I also bought another overpriced plant just to get away from the vendor - he was selling just rooted begonia plugs for $6 - not even potted. He kept trying to make me buy plants I wasn't interested in. Finally I took a red flash oxalis for $8 - very overpriced for the size but at least I wanted it. Anyway, he amused me (and at least he sold plants). I bought from D. Landreth Seed Company (seed potatoes, Bishop of Llandoff dahlia and malabar seeds). Peony Envy was there (interesting name). I did not buy but I plan to visit their location. That should be interesting.

Hi gldnol, Yes should be good seminars. hristie_sw_mo did do online research but some of it's conflicting. And, since she got her plants from me a few seasons ago, she thought it best to ask me directly. *wink* Generally though, I do usually direct people to the Missouri University Extension Agricultural Publications as well as Ohio State University's Home and Garden Publications for any gardening related question. There are many more excellent opportunities to learn at these Sustainable Garden Seminars. Looks like there are over 50 people signed up for many of them so there's good interest out there. Many of them are free if you just call to register. It's always nice to be around other gardeners and I always pick up some tidbits I can use in my own gardening.

Iris are pretty tough. You could likely plant them anytime now as long as your soil is dry enough to dig in. As for flowers, you might get some depending on the size of the plants you got. tj

Bill,
I think you showed remarkable restraint to come away with just those. :) We will, however, have to report you to the Plumieholics chapter in your area. I think the minimum acceptable number is one dozen cuttings/plants.

First post! Went to the plant show at South Coast Plaza myself. Came away with a rooted plumie called Saigon Moon. Apparently just registered. Alot of nice plants. You plumie addicts that live in the area must check it out.

Robert- Saigon Moon is one of Bud Guillot's plants and it is a beautiful, large white flower like a white Cindy Moragne. It is a beauty. Bill

I heard the story about how the Saigon Moon plumeria was brought over from Vietnam. A man named John Tarvin (who I bought the plant from) acquired some cuttings from the owner. And I did buy a Guillot's Sunset cutting. Anxious to see the flowers. Robert

John is a great guy and a longtime friend of Bud's. John and I have traded plants and he has the only upright growing Aztec Gold I know. I would always recommend his plants as he always has excellent quality plants from top quality stock. John also has one of the best collections around. Since you bought your GS from the SCPS booth, it is also probably from Bud's tree or a plant from a cutting from there. One of the trees is fifty years old and two others are about 35 years old so these are veteran plants. Bill

Just returned from the plant show. I also picked up a rooted Saigon Moon. There was an incredible yellow orange plant named California Sunset, approx 4-5 ft tall, going for $450, way high. Managed to get a multi-tip cutting from the SCPS booth. Couldn't find any internet info on California Sunset.
There were lots of cuttings and rooted plants at reasonable prices. Don't miss it if you're local. It runs till Sunday eve.

I'm not local but drove hour and a half to get there and 2 and a half hours to get back on Fri. afternoon. However, it was worth driving. I bought GS, California Sally; both from SCPS booth, and 2 rooted Pink Rainbow, and Samoan Fluff. I was overwhelmed to see too many cuttings but they were out of Ammaron Curly White, DARN.

Bill, I met John! He is very nice and friendly man. He gave me a tip on planting Plumeria on limestone hillside garden. I enjoyed having conversation with him very much. I'm so glad that I bought CS from him now.

Boom- John's Cal Sal is related to mine and it is a fantastic large flower and a prolific bloomer. It is one of my favorites. Bill
