rank beginner gypsy pepper ?

first off, i got a couple of "grumpy" replies on another

forum for asking a ? before searching the FAQ, or old

posts

after an hour or so of searching, i've decided to take

a deep breath and ask anyway

a friend of mind with huge green thumbs turned me on

to her gypsy peppers, i love the flavor!

so a few weeks ago, she gave me some seeds

actually, i forgot about them (big huge "on no!!")

they have been in a zip lock in my drawer

is it too late to start them? would i be better off

trying to find a transplant?

is this a good pepper for a rank beginner?

i'm tryin' to stay away from overly fussy

veggies

i'm actually in zone 8b, about 70 miles northwest of

houston, my friend grows them in zone 9 (i lovingly

call her a "zone 9 brat", cause she's always rubbin'

it in that she's in zone 9!!)

I'm getting ready to start my peppers from seed and I live up in Canada, so go ahead and start them. You should be fine even in a few months.

Do you have enough seed that you could start half of them and save the other half for next year? That's what I would do. I grew them here a couple years ago, but our season is short(hot, but short) and I didn't get many ripe ones(even though I started them indoors). I also grew them several years ago in zone 7(PNW) which has a longer but cooler season. If I remember correctly, I got a better yield back then. I didn't think they were any more difficult to grow than any other pepper. Your friend could probably give you pointers on how she grows hers.
Please don't be put off by so-called grumpy replies...they're usually not meant to be that way. It's just that there is a huge amount of info for beginners on the forums if you read the FAQs and just read through the older posts, but I understand sometimes a quick answer is needed. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and let us know how it goes.

Book for A Beginner to Herbs & Veggies

I've got the Burpee book and it's pretty good as a beginner guide goes though I'd ignore their estimates for how many plants per family. For the herb side, I also use "the Ultimate Herb Book" by Antony Atha since it has reasonably good info and it was on sale at Barnes and Noble. Since you're growing mostly the basic stuff, I think that just reading some of the info and back posts on this site will give you a lot of great info on many of the herbs and if you hop over to the hot pepper forum, they have lots of good info on most of what you are growing. From what I see on your blog site, the basil is looking really good and it's going to get pretty big, rather fast as the weather stays warm. The window box pots are a little small for some of what you are growing but it's a great start just to get things going. I'm trying patio tomatoes for the first time this year so I don't know for sure but I'd bet that they are going to way outgrow the rosemary (and they have different fertilizer / water requirements) so if you have a spare pot, I'd move the rosemary to another home. Aside from that, just experiment and have fun.

I haven't read either, but of the two I would recomend the Burpee book to beginners (and non beginners). Those folks have a lot of knowledge and the emphasis on organics probably means they will explain things in more depth than what the 'typical' book would that simply says do, this, this and then this and never explains why. The other book is written by people in Europe and the environmental differences may not seem like much, but they are significant. Their experience is growing in a different part of the world than yours. In general anything Burpee puts it's effort behind is quality. On that basis alone I would go with the Burpee book.

They don't call America a melting pot for nothing. A "potager" in the original french form was a walled garden consisting of very geometric raised beds laid out on symetrical axis (axes?) that grew fruit, herbs, vegetables, and flowers for the use of the house or estate. Fruit trees were often espaliered around the perimeter, the veggies were mixed with the flowers, herbs were grown for medicinal purposes as well as for eating. Monks in cloisters were some of the earliest potager makers, with each monk tending a small area. And, of course, the very wealthy had massive, and very ornate potagers. I think the term "kitchen garden" would include only veggies, pot herbs, and fruit. It might be planted formally and for beauty, and it might not. Then, of course, the American vegetable garden that most of us have always known was strictly utilitarian, designed and laid out like a mini farm, in rows, for the exclusive purpose of providing food in season, plus plenty of canned or frozen food for the rest of the year. Nothing wrong with that at all, or with any of them, for that matter. And now all these concepts are melting together here in America (and probably other parts of the world too). The walls have become fences or hedges (or none). The beds are planted in formal style, cottage style, or any combination of the two. And then, in the interest of space, we are throwing in pots, either as accents, or as the main event. We're really good at re-defining things, aren't we? I think you may want to haunt all three forums, and draw ideas from all. Put them into your own eclectic mixer and come up with a garden that makes you happy. I suppose we all have our own reasons for making gardens, but certainly, the pleasure we gain from them has alot to do with the way we build, plant, and maintain them. Make your potager your own way. No one will quibble with whether or not you fit the "definition".

your not gonna believe this, i just spoke to her, we
were talkin' about something else, and i mentioned
i wanted to get those started, she said "thats not
the gypsy pepper, thats that hot as hell pepper you
ate at my house last summer, and you loved"

so i guess now i've gotta get out there and find me
a gypsy pepper, i really liked their flavor

but that hot one, man, i gotta tell ya, that was one
of the hottest peppers i've ever had, i should have
written that name down, i'll be sure and ask her again,
but i remember it was tiny, and red, and like the fires
of hell, it wasn't habanero, and i think it was smaller
than a serrano, no worry, i'll ask her, so i can keep
my journal up to date

i've tried so hard to keep out of the plant stores, as
with all the building we're doing, i'm a bit low on dispos-able funds, but i really want a gypsy pepper, so i'm gonna

Good luck with the Peppers. I started mine not to long ago and I'm in zone 9.... Central Florida. It is a great time to start peppers. I'm seeing the jalapenos and habeneros in Home Depot now as small plants. Like the other person said before, plant half now and half next season. I am waiting on my gypsy pepper seeds from a trade right now. I first saw them on a veggie platter from Publix. I planted the seeds from the red ones and they have germinated. So I'll see if they bear fruit. If you can't find the seeds, try a veggie platter and plant the seeds from the red-ist one you can get. Those gypsies are tasty! :p

The Gypsy is indeed a great tasting pepper. I've grown it the last few years and will be growing it again this year.

However, keep in mind that the Gypsy is an F1 Hybrid. The offspring produced from using seed collected from one will not produce true - you'll get something more like one of the original parents that was used to create the cross.

Having said all that, I think Gypsy is a very good pepper. It's one of the few hybrids I grow.

i found a gypsy pepper today!! and the label stated it
was a hybrid, so no saving seeds from that

i can't wait! i hope they do well for me

wish me luck!!
