Those purple jalapenos are a beautiful plant, but they do not have as much "heat" as the regular ones. They produce a LOT of pods under the right conditions. Chris

I ripen all my purple jals to at least 50% red. They're hotter and that wonderful flavor is enhanced. I grow purple jals cause they have that little bit of smoky flavor to them. Better than a regular jals...that I don't grow anymore. I want to try making chipotle peppers from the purples. My understanding is that a chipotle is a red ripe (on the plant) jalapeno dried in a smoker. Also, all my purples start green, then turn purple/almost black, then eventually red. Takes some patience that I think is worth it. =) They can also ripen to red after harvesting. I don't think they're as hot as if they ripened on that plant. -HabBob

Sleekit, I did top three of them early on, and they are already pretty little bushes. I will get some pics later. Actually, I also successfully cloned one of the cuttings that I "Topped" - and it is a also growing into a Y-shaped bush (and has flowers already). I wanted to experiment, and let some grow, and prune some others to see what would happen. I am thinking of trying my hand at Bansai Pepper plants here, in Switzerland, and sell them as high end products... may be my best option here in Switzerland, if I have to over-winter every year (unless I invest in a large Greenhouse). I will definitely try to Bansai a Purple Jalapeno, they are quite lovely plants, stalk, leaves, flowers and peppers.... I am just happy that my Jalapenos will be producing this year, both purple and regular..... my Habaneros, Scorpions and Ghosts all seem to be "over winter projects" - except for the two I kept full time in my tiny Greenhouse. The plants are nice.... but they are growing painstakingly slow. I am getting good production from peppers that are Jalapeno level heat or less, though.....
