what peppers made your grow again list?

Hi folks.

I was sending some seeds to a friend the other day and it got me to thinkin. We all try new varieties every year. Many don't make the GROW AGAIN list for one reason or another. BUT, there are those few surprises every year that you look back at and say "Boy, that's a good one - gotta grow him again!".

Every winter/early spring we see the threads that say "What are you growing this year?". These lists usually include all the NEW varieties you're going to try. We also see the "My Favorite Peppers are ..." threads. That's not the same as what you are actually growing AGAIN in your garden. I would like to know what pepper(s) are good enough to have made your "GROW AGAIN" list AND are/will be in the ground/pot this growing season.

I might find something NEW to try from one of ya'll!

This is my second season growing chilies. I have overwintered and collected some seed from last season's favorites:

2nd generation from seed:

Armstrong Serrano (from mutant pod)

Fatalii would have been there, but I roasted the seedlings in the sun

I have added the Grenada Hot to my short list. I grew it last year and it is very similar to the Caribbean Red in taste and appearance. It's just a tad larger.

Anaheim's, like the Big Jim and the Sandia, are also on the short list.

If jalapenos weren't so easy to get at the flea market for $2/lb, they would definitely be on the short list.

I've enjoyed this thread. Some of our 2013 hits and misses from first time items were: Hits Mizuna: Comes up quickly from seed, produces abundantly and is a cut and come again veggie. Tokyo Bekana Grew very well here from seed in the spring and fall. We love it raw in salads as an alternative to lettuce. Fingerling potatoes: we grew five varieties and all did well and were DELICIOUS. Did very well at the farmers' market. Zephyr summer squash. These are very delicious and showed good disease resistance and yield. Safari zuchinni. It wasn't a good year for zukes for us, but these kept coming even after the others bit the dust. Red Russian kale. Produced very well. Tasty and tender. Moon and Stars Yellow Fleshed watermelons. We really enjoyed these. Not as sweet as Crimson Sweet, of course, but crispy and delicious. Fails Lemon cucumbers. Produced poorly. They taste fine but not worth the space they take up. Won't plant again. Burgundy okra. The problem with this is that the wildlife couldn't resist it. Deer and groundhogs destroyed it, while hardly bothering the Clemson Spineless. If you can keep the critters away, this would be a good choice. But we won't bother with it again. Creasy Greens (upland cress). This didn't come up at all. Surprising since it grows wild here. We won't bother trying again. Here is a link that might be useful: White Flint Farm

Tulsastorm, You're welcome. It took me years to figure out that peppers produce less well if they get too cold too early in their life. When I lived in Texas in zone 8 where the air and soil warm up about 4-6 weeks earlier than they do here, I could transplant tomatoes and peppers at the same time, most likely because once it warmed up, it tended to stay that way. The peppers and tomatoes would flower and set fruit at the same time. After moving here in 1999, I learned I couldn't plant them at the same time here because tomatoes are a lot more cold tolerant and can handle our wildly fluctuating spring temperatures here, but peppers cannot handle the recurring cold nights. Tomato plants will tolerate temperatures in the 30s (as long as they stay above freezing and are free of frost, which can form at temps as high as 38 or 39 degrees under some conditions). Peppers, though, if exposed to soil temperatures below 55 degrees for even just a few days, can be damaged. You may not see any visible damage on the plant, but the plant growth often will stall and then once the plant begins growing again, it just never really kicks into production very well. I am very careful to keep my pepper seedlings inside when the weather is cool, and even if I carry them outside to soak up the sun every chance I get, I still carry them back inside on any night when the forecast low goes below 55-60 degrees. I get huge yields from my plants and I believe that's because I never let my pepper plants get cold. I also harvest peppers amazingly early....last year I got the first big harvest of sweet bell peppers on June 22nd, when I harvested 6 lbs. and the first big harvest of jalapenos on June 15th, when I harvested 10 lbs. 2 oz. Last year, I stopped weighing the pepper harvest at some point (probably early August) because I just thought to myself "enough is enough" but I know I had harvested well over 75 lbs. of hot peppers and over 30 lbs. of sweet peppers by late August and continued to harvest from in-ground plants until the first frost in October. I harvested my last pepper from container-grown plants that I was overwintering (in the garage at night, out on the sunny patio on days when temps were above 40) in January, and then the plants in the garage froze this week. I'm giving you those numbers to show it should be easy to get good pepper yields from plants transplanted into the ground in late April or early May after the soil and air temps are in the right range. Peppers are prone to many kinds of diseases including those that make the leaves puckered, twisted and mottled. Pepper Mosaic Virus is often the cause of these issues. You also will see yellow or brown splotches on the leaves, and these are caused by many different bacterial and fungal diseases. Also, if you have sandy soil or sandy loam, root knot nematodes can cause the plants to stunt and be unproductive. One way to know if you have root knot nematodes is to check your plant roots when you pull up the plants in the fall. If you see knots and galls on the roots, you have nematodes. You can do everything right in terms of meeting the plants' needs, but if you have root knot nematodes, you may not get many peppers. I am confident that if you make sure your young pepper plants never are exposed to cold temperatures early in their lives, you can get a really good harvest from them. Dawn

I'd join in with what the most said: A brown/chocolate variety is a must! Get a Chocolate Habanero and 7pod Douglah for guaranteed 1m scovilles. I haven't tried brown jolokias but imagine they are wonderful. Also i'd switch Thai bird for African Bird's Eye (Piri Piri), to get some C. Frutescens kick as well. Balloon pepper represents your baccatums but I'd also add Aji Amarillo or Lemon drop. Cheers, Djole

'm not sure I understand the question, but pepper plants produce numerous fruits. You harvest and more grow. Now, the question is whether you are hand pollinating in a greenhouse. If not, you're not going to get any fruit.

Zanderspice, I suspect that the second-year Fatalii is going to be a monster. I'd love to see pictures of that one come this september.

I'll give a tip to those looking for outrageous flavor: don't sleep on Datils, Red Habaneros, Jamaican Hot Chocolates, Harold's St. Bart's, or Burkina Yellows. They're commercially available and they're delicious.

I am probably not really qualified here, but of the three years I've been growing peppers, I've settled on Biker Billy for my Jalapenos and California Wonder Bell Pepper. I've also grown regular orange Habaneros all three years (got 16 of them this year). Things will probably change this year though. I am growing quite a few species I've never eaten before and cannot get locally. I am suspecting I'll be changing it up next year. I am really looking forward to my Jamaican Scotch Bonnets and the Fatali's.

Ya'll have impressive lists of peppers going on! I've looked at most of them and here's my picks:

zanderspice - I think I'll try the Red Savina. The fact that you overwintered it is a good enough recommendation for me. I also overwintered Fatalii and am trying Lemon Drop for the first time this year.

bob_in_pc - Grenada Hot sounds interesting - think I'll try it if I can find a seed source. No luck so far.

groovy1 - Harold's St Bart is one I considered last year but didn't grow. Thanks for reminding me! I picked Billy Goat to try for the first time this year and already have it started. Glad to see it on your list.

kj_57701 - I also picked Biker Billy as one of the new peppers to try this year and have it started as well. I'm looking forward to some good poppers this summer!

KJ57701, yes! You're qualified! Also, see if you can get a few Red Habs to go along with the Orange Habs that you have. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! Finally, where'd you get the seeds for the Jamaican Scotch Bonnet?

Rdback, see if you taste the cherry in the Billy Goat!

Groovy1: The Fatalii was small and started late last season, but it was beautifully symmetrical and very healthy. I hope it grows twice as much this year. It may end up pretty big, but it's less than a foot tall at the moment.

Rdback: It was just the luck of the draw that I planted Red Savina seeds. It is a nice Chili, but I prefer the Fatalii. I am in Southern California, where overwintering only means not throwing away. I nearly tossed the Red Savina, but I just dug it up and set it aside. A couple months later, it still was alive, so I repotted it. Of everything I grew last year, the Fatalii, and Lemon Drops were my favorite.

Early Jalapeno- I only had two plants but they just kept putting out until freezing temps killed them.

Noid Purple(what I call it)- This one I got in a pack of Sebes seed(a yellow hot)- I searched and searched and couldn't ID it. Anyway, it's quite hot(I'm guessing between a Jal and a Cayenne)and I'm hoping the seeds I saved from it will come true this season.

Sweet Pickle- Not hot, but prolific and versatile.

KJ, how hot is the Biker Billy pepper? I am growing that one this year, that is if the one seed that sprouted actually makes it. How big does it get? I don't have any room in the garden for it so I am going to put it in a pot. What would be a good sized pot for it?

This will be my first time growing Fatalii. Ive heard nothing but good things about it and it seems to be popular. I wanted a couple choc habs but never got the seeds.

web_of_hair: I over-wintered a prolific Tobasco and it is doing the best of all my over-wintered peppers. I have Lemon Drop seeds started for this year, thanks to a generous offer by Pepper_Rancher. The Black Hungarian looks interesting - might give it a try.

groovy1: IÂll let you know if the Billy GoatÂs been in the Cherries!

zanderspice: Like you, I over-wintered a Fatalii as well. Unlike you, here in VA you need to bring them inside for 6 or 7 months to over-winter! I tried John's (Fiedlermiester) radical prune method when I dug up and brought all my peppers in last fall. Now, the Fatalii is showing some signs of life, but the juryÂs still out on its survival.

noinwi: IÂve got the Jalapenos and Ornamentals covered for this year, but IÂll add yours to my list of candidates for next year. Good luck with your "Noid Purple" - hope it grows out to your liking!

ohio_grower: IÂm either over-wintering or have started seeds for everything on your list, except maybe the "Hybird Chili" lol! No, wait. IÂm trying Gypsy this year, so does that qualify? This is also my first year for the Marconi and IÂm really looking forward to trying it.

Alan (mister_al): I have your list covered as well, except for the Golden Greek Pepperoncini and the Wild Brazil. The Wild Brazil looks and sounds similar to a "bird" pepper, which is on next yearÂs list. The Pepperoncini sounds interesting - have to see if I can find a place for it.

habbob: I certainly have heard of Thai Dragon, but have never tried it. From what IÂve read, it sounds like it could make a great powder. Same goes for the Caribbean Red - IÂve heard of it, just never tried it. I over-wintered two Chocolate Habs and both look like theyÂre doing very well. Looking forward to seeing how they produce this season!

Kendra (ardnek710): Now thereÂs a list of peppers to research! The Chiero Recife, Malagueta and St. Lucia seasoning pepper catch my eye. IÂll be looking at them a little more closely!

bdautreuil: IÂve tried or am trying most of your list (except your seeds from friendsÂ peppers). The two I havenÂt tried are Spicy Mustard Habanero and the Cowhorn Cayenne. IÂve got several of both types already going, so IÂll add these two to next yearÂs list.
