Starting my Plumeria (Frangipani) from seed

I bought 6 seeds from the Thomson and Morgan website and I sowed these seeds in 6 small containers according to the instructions on http://www.plumeria101.com/seeds101.html

Here is what I did myself:

I sowed them on February 6th and today it's February 8th. They are under a grow light and indoor at an average tempurature of 70 degrees.

Do you think I am doing everything right?

oh, I also want to precise that I cut drainage holes beneath these paper glasses!

OK I dont know where you are located, but I'd put a heat mat underneath. Did you soak them first? In most places, seedling want warmth underneath. Otherwise, it looks ok. I tend to be inpatient. I have 200 or so seedlings at various stages. I pull on them, and even planted the "embrioys" (sp?) inside (after pulling off the "brown stuff") just in dirt and so far, they seem to be doing OK. Let us know where you are that may help. They definitely need warmth!Some of my seedlings are only 6 months old but are thick and have multiple branches already!

vegbed, I can find a home for some sticks. I'm afraid I don't have lychee, loquat or passionfruit. I do have dwarf mulberry, which is as easy to grow from sticks as plumeria. I'm about to do a major trim on it, so I can offer big, long sticks. I also have calamondin babies. It's a tiny, sour orange that is great in cocktails or as a marinade for fish, and it's no-care in Miami, but I have no idea how long these babies would take to bear fruit. Hmmm. Let's see, what else do I have that might interest? sapodilla seeds - I'll have to check to see if I've got any seedlings, but these often volunteer, so they must be easy to get growing. And it is the most amazingly sweet fruit. Red dwarf ponciana seeds. Queens Wreath seeds A million century plant babies (actually, those are going out with the trash Monday unless someone says something. It bloomed next to a bees' nest and I swear every single flower was pollinated. There are 1.36 million two-inch babies. I've never seen anything like it.) A rather large piece of a staghorn fern that never attached right and needs a new home (the other piece attached, so I'm thinking of just splitting them.) I also have a kind of unusual croton - at least I never see it at HD. It's green/yellow with long, thin, weeping leaves. One six-inch stick rooted in water five years ago is now six feet tall.

Hi, Wendy, I don't know where you are in Oz, but I can relate to the dryness. I lived in the Coffs Harbour (mid north coast of NSW) area amongst others for some time. There, with it not raining significantly for over a year, I watered some young gumtrees every few days. They grew well. Incredibly so in some cases. Then a year later, a storm blew a couple of them over. Most of the roots were surface - my regular watering had encouraged that. So I would strongly recommend that you don't water your transplanted frangi "a little every day" but give the ground it's in a major soaking, then mulch (if you haven't already) and leave it for some time. Repeat only with major soakings, but not very often. The growth that you're getting now is of what was there ready to be put out. It needs to re-establish the fine roots, grow some more and "settle in"! Don't worry about it. Give it time and a lot of love! They can cope with a lot. Once I pulled up a cutting, left it sitting against a rock, and it still flowered! Oh that it were so easy here in Cornwall! :-)))

felixcat- I have used two needles after wetting the coat, slip the needles in and part to split the coat. Seedling growers. Just realize that the plumeria has a wide range of genes and your seeds may look nothing at all like the parent. Also, seedlings usually take from 3 years to 20 years to flower with the bulk blooming in three. However, you usually need to wait for three seasons to be sure a flower is correct as many first flowers are not true to the plant. As a rule, the whites produce a variety of whites, but the multi-colors are the best because you can get all sorts of sizes, shapes and colors. The Moragnes are excellent as the seedlings are little giants and they hold all the colors in their genes. Daisy Wilcox is also great because it is so big (mine had a 7" flower last year although most are 4-5") I would also recommend Gloria Schmidt and Cooktown Sunset if you can find their seeds.

This wasn't windy enough to be scary... not in Palm Beach anyway. I wonder how this thread's originator, Caroles Jungle, made out, over on the west coast. I am sure that she got the brunt of this storm, and I have been thinking about her. Over here, I am glad that I pulled leaves. 2 days of, even the winds we had (maybe 40 mph), are very rough on plants. Just ask my bananas and hibiscus! We did not board up for this one. Normally I use plywood over every opening. I am now looking at a kevlar screen material that can stand 270 mph impacts. The great thing about this material, is that it can be installed from just under the roof line, down to the ground, a few feet from the house. I would do this around my Florida room, which is all windows, and the front entrance to the house. I would actually be able to move all my potted plants against the house, behind the screen. No more dragging everything to the garage, where things inevitably get damaged, because they are packed so tight. And because it is a screen, it lets light in. For now, let's keep in mind that alot of folks are still in the path of this storm. Strengthening is possible as it gets out into the Atlantic. Hope all stay safe. Bob

I soaked them in a glass of warm water (but not hot) and left them there for 12 hours before sowing them already. However, warm water turned out to be room-temperature after 1 hour or so, so they spent 1 hour in warm water and 11 hours at the room temperature.

Right now the temperature inside the apartment is 73 degrees, and this temperature is just about the same both during the day and during the night. I live in Arlington, TX, which is a town between Dallas and Fort Worth. I am aware that I will have to bring the plant indoor as soon as it gets in the low 50s. But I would prefer to keep the plant indoor permanently!

You must open some small holes on the top of the plastic bag to prevent seed rot from over humidity.
