Starting my Plumeria (Frangipani) from seed

I bought 6 seeds from the Thomson and Morgan website and I sowed these seeds in 6 small containers according to the instructions on http://www.plumeria101.com/seeds101.html

Here is what I did myself:

I sowed them on February 6th and today it's February 8th. They are under a grow light and indoor at an average tempurature of 70 degrees.

Do you think I am doing everything right?

oh, I also want to precise that I cut drainage holes beneath these paper glasses!

OK I dont know where you are located, but I'd put a heat mat underneath. Did you soak them first? In most places, seedling want warmth underneath. Otherwise, it looks ok. I tend to be inpatient. I have 200 or so seedlings at various stages. I pull on them, and even planted the "embrioys" (sp?) inside (after pulling off the "brown stuff") just in dirt and so far, they seem to be doing OK. Let us know where you are that may help. They definitely need warmth!Some of my seedlings are only 6 months old but are thick and have multiple branches already!

this was kind of interesting I am a Canadian who has a home the past 12 years, half a year in Fort Myers FLorida I have four plumeria trees in my yard but mostly do not see them in bloom when I am here I know they bloom as neigbhours have sent photos Silly but I didn't even know they have a nice seed. What plant doesn't have seeds When though do they normally set seed. And I have to look more about this sprouting seed in these peanuts Here I think I am sort of a knowledgeable gardener, but always more and more new or rather great ideas. Thanks for the information as well

I'll go ahead and put my 2 cents in here. I've had amazing luck here in St. Pete and my plumerias receive direct summer sun and I have to admit, very rarely any fertilizer. Yes, the trick is to not overwater them. I have also heard that it's important that the cutting is at least a foot tall in length. You can then place "the stick" into the ground and nature should take care of the rest. I made the mistake of purchasing a rare variety, the name escapes me right now, from a nursery in Ca. $80 later, the "stick" hasn't grown an inch and I've been babying it to death. All my other plummies are trees right now, so it makes me wonder about dealing with smaller cuttings. My recommendation is to spend your $ at a local grower and forgo spending ALOT of $ after just visiting a website as I did. They will grow like weeds, just remember to get a good size cutting, locally if possible. Hope this will help. I LOVE my plummies! Sue.

felixcat- I have used two needles after wetting the coat, slip the needles in and part to split the coat. Seedling growers. Just realize that the plumeria has a wide range of genes and your seeds may look nothing at all like the parent. Also, seedlings usually take from 3 years to 20 years to flower with the bulk blooming in three. However, you usually need to wait for three seasons to be sure a flower is correct as many first flowers are not true to the plant. As a rule, the whites produce a variety of whites, but the multi-colors are the best because you can get all sorts of sizes, shapes and colors. The Moragnes are excellent as the seedlings are little giants and they hold all the colors in their genes. Daisy Wilcox is also great because it is so big (mine had a 7" flower last year although most are 4-5") I would also recommend Gloria Schmidt and Cooktown Sunset if you can find their seeds.

Erika, you need to take seriously the import requirements for phytosanitary ceritificates. I just read in the Canadian exchange forum of a gardener who was fined (I think it was $300 US) for mailing plant matter into the USA without certification. Plus, Erika, your own state of Texas works hard to protect its agriculture, natural lands, and waterways. Search the Ponds forum of GW and you will find a note from a man who was fined $1000 US for sending water hyacinth into your very city! (You are from San Antonio, right?)

I soaked them in a glass of warm water (but not hot) and left them there for 12 hours before sowing them already. However, warm water turned out to be room-temperature after 1 hour or so, so they spent 1 hour in warm water and 11 hours at the room temperature.

Right now the temperature inside the apartment is 73 degrees, and this temperature is just about the same both during the day and during the night. I live in Arlington, TX, which is a town between Dallas and Fort Worth. I am aware that I will have to bring the plant indoor as soon as it gets in the low 50s. But I would prefer to keep the plant indoor permanently!

You must open some small holes on the top of the plastic bag to prevent seed rot from over humidity.
