I planted my gladioli too close together - in a pot.
Comments (4)I never fertilize my glads. The flower is already developed in the bulb and fertilizer is not needed to cause it to bloom. If the bulb is not of a sufficient size to bloom the fertilizer may be helpful to prepare it for next years bloom. Glads produce many small bulbs that will take a year or three to reach blooming size. If you have purchased bulbs they are very dependable bloomers, taking around 90 days from planting to bloom. Working with a lot of bulbs most gardeners will plant weekly to extend the blooming period. You don't say what you are using for planting medium but packaged mixes will be fertile enough and one of the problems of glads is growing too tall and falling over. Al...See MoreAhh! I planted my carrot rows to close together.
Comments (15)In his biointensive gardening book John Jeavons recommends a 3 inch spacing (in all directions) between each full sized carrot. But since you are growing 'Little Fingers' I think they would be fine at an even closer spacing like 1 inch between each carrot. I would leave the carrots just as you planted them and then thin them to a 1 inch hexagonal spacing when they are big enough to easily thin. The Square Foot Gardening method recommends 9 carrots per square foot (4 inch spacing in all directions) but to me this seems absurd unless you want big fat carrots. That may be nice for the county fair but really, who wants to eat big fat carrots? :( I think most people would prefer to eat long thin carrots. My experience has been that the bigger the diameter of the carrot the woodier and less edible the texture. Here is a link that might be useful: A related thread about carrot spacing...See MoreHow close do I plant my baby roses?
Comments (7)If the roses you have are on the Vintage Gardens web site check their size comparisons. If it shows a wide growing type of growth, say six feet tall and wide plant the roses as if they are that large now. It looks funny for the first year or so but planting a 1.5 foot rose in the right spot is so much easier than digging up a 7 foot rose to make room. For the most part my roses are widely spaced but they were not always planted far enough apart. I used to cram them together, I mean this stick is only just a foot tall. Jude The Obscure was a little Heirloom band size bush when planted, now it it is seven feet tall and wide. Most of my gallica's have not been suckering monsters and even they are taking up three or four feet each way now. Lance...See MoreHow close do you plants plumerias in a planter?
Comments (2)Bill, mahalo! That is what I needed to hear. I see what you mean about Guillots Sunset. You gave me a large cutting last year, and a short one. I planted them both in one large pot (together). The plant is HUGE! No inflos yet this year (but I am still hoping). The tree has the most leaves of all of my other varieties, other than my Singapore Whites before they lost all of their leaves. The picture you had sent me of you backyard shows one planter ( at least it looks like a planter, rocks on the outside, set in cement?) and it looked like they were closer. Pictures can be decieving! I will look closely at the plants I am moving into the planter and see how they are maturing. I am planning on putting my Princess Victoria in the planter, and it seems to be somewhat upright grower... Longer trunk and first branching. This year I seem to have inflos on all the branches, so it will be interesting to watch. Thanks again. I will post before and after pix... Hopefully tomorrow I will replant all the ones I need to into the planter. Jen...See Morekbauman
