How do you tell the difference between Phoenix?

I purchased some type of Phoenix from a local nursery, didn't have a tag, but it looks to me to be either a Dactylifera or a Sylvestris. It's still small, definitely not a Roebellini or a Canariensis. How do I tell which one it is? The leaves are like a lighter green color, but I wouldn't call them silvery. I'll try to post a pic.

I think a pic would help a lot. But in my experience, P. Sylvestris has a very noticeable slivery tinge to the fronds whereas P. Dactylifera is pretty much all green.

Dave makes a good point. If the squash tastes good or if you just want to grow it for decorative purposes and you want to save the seeds from it, then you need to take special precautions to prevent more cross pollination from happening. And by that I mean you have to hand pollinate them. Take a male flower from the plant you want to save seeds from and pollinate a female flower from the same plant with it. You have to be sure that the female flower wasn't already pollinated and after you do the pollinating you need to tie the blossom closed to prevent it from being pollinated with other pollen. Be sure to mark the squash in some way (like loosely tying a piece of string around the stem so as not to girdle it) so that you know which ones are pure. Even after doing this, it could take years to stabilize the traits that you want. The pumpkins I mentioned in my previous comment are the only type of squash I grow which means I don't have to worry about cross pollination. So the thought of even more crosses happening didn't cross my mind (pun intended). And a melon and squash can't cross. Rodney

You can also tell by the leaves. Key limes have very small leaves -- maybe up to 1.5" across by 2" long max (usually smaller) with little or no petiole wing. 'Tahiti' limes have "average" leaves, maybe 3" long, with variable petiole wings, but at least some leaves should have a significant wing. Lemons have among the largest of all citrus leaves -- 4-5" long, with no petiole wing at all. Key limes also make little, "twiggy" new growth, whereas the other two put out much larger flushes, often several feet long.

Trey, Here's a website with pictures that may help. Young male ruby-throats are white-throated, with white in their tails--pretty much like adult females. They can be distinguished from adult females by the spotting or streaking on the throat, which increases as the summer goes on. Adult females tend to have purer white throats, but just to confuse things, will sometimes also have darker markings--but this is less typical. So, if you've got a summer bird with white in the tail, and a white throat with noticeable streaking, and especially if it seems small in size, it's probably a young male. Sometimes the males will even get a few red feathers on the throat, but won't fully molt into their red throats until they reach their wintering grounds. When they return in spring, they'll look like adult males. From what I can see, young females are very difficult to tell from adult females. Whereas the green feathers on an adult female tend to be pure green all the way to the tip, young birds will often show buffy edges, especially on the top of the head and face. There are other differences, too, but they'd be hard to make out on a flying bird. Take a look at this website, and see if you can make sense of it. I meant to say that P. Dactylifera usually has a silvery tinger to the fronds, not P. Sylvestris. I guess it might be difficult to tell when younger, but they are pretty easy to tell apart once mature because the fronds are positioned differently and the color of the fronds is also a bit different.

Looks like P.Canariensis or P. Sylvestris what ever its a nice palm. Phoenix hybrid very easily so really hard to tell.

Can't tell though it looks most like canariensis.
Show photo of the petiole bases.

at that age could be lots of different things (just about any hybrid, too). But in 10 years I will have a better guess for you.

def. not CIDP leaves are too blue/green and appear to be way too stiff. They also are arranged not the same as a CIDP. I would lean toward Sylvestries if not a of a dacty. -Justin in VB

I thought CIDP leaflets are more uniform in their arrangement, more flat like a Roebellini or a majesty. These leaflets are more spurratic like a queen palm arrangement. But when I first saw it at the nursery, a CIDP is the palm that came to mind. It seems to be growing more squat and a thick trunk for the size, although you can't tell now with the geraniums growing around the base.
