Canary Island Date Palm with multiple trunks?
Comments (1)Hmmm...I suppose it COULD happen, but like you say, it seems very, very unusual for a Canary Island date palm (P. canariensis, which I know you know, LOL, but someone reaing along might not). I'd guess either Senegal date palm (one of my very favorite palms!) or a culinary date palm (Phoenix dactylifera), which sends up very sturdy pups/offsets. Time will probably tell--whatever it is, send in some pics, and enjoy it! :) Let us know if you decide on a definite ID. Take care, Grant...See MoreWhat climber would climb my craggy-trunk Canary Island Date Palm
Comments (6)Besides the hardy vines others will tell you about-you might try the new Sun Parasol Mandevilla's. In pink,red,white.Some are dwarf in leaf and flower,growing habit others-and you can tell by the more robust pot growth,will cover more area,but are never big vines. Planted all around that palm they like the part shade. Not expensive.You can find them at very low cost at the home improvement stores. I have had them bloom near all year...and if they do stop they are among the first to bloom in early spring. Buy ten and impress the neighbors. Hardy to 20f. Much better where it doesn't go below 32f but a very few nights a year....See MoreCanary Island Date Palms and Medjool Date Palms in SE
Comments (3)I think of the two, CIDP will proove to be better suited to your conditions. The problem with Medjool Dates (palms native to North Africa) is the fact that they are not crazy about very humid, wet climates. I don't think they appreciate either hot & wet or cold & wet. I believe pympy dates are more tropical in origin so prefer the more humid conditions (but are probably not cold hardy enough for your area)....See MoreCanary Island Date Palms
Comments (5)Canary Island dates find their opimal climate across the souhern third of Aust, i.e. Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and the Victorian riverlands. In the US the finest specimens I saw were in LA, some maybe 25 m tall, but they did not seem to be grown in the more humid climate of S Florida. I think the Qld coastal climate does not suit them, whether in tropics or subtropics, though my observations there have been limited I admit. In some parts of Sydney mature Canary Island dates have been devastated by the Fusarium wilt disease, which appeared about 25 years ago....See Morekinzyjr {Lakeland, FL - USDA: 9b, Record: 20F}
