Ordered some seed today

Stopping in at the forum gets me a bit antsy so i just ordered some seed from Brad to play with. I will take them to work and start them in the greenhouse. What are y'all doing to nurture your green thumb?

Andrew would probably be out of surgery by now. Hope all went well for him.

cool! Im not doing anything with the plumeria. A few are pushing leaves so wont be long now. My citrus are blooming their tails off so thats always nice. We started quite a few veggies a few weeks back in our greenhouse. I had home grown lettuce on a sandwich this weekend, yum.

I am a getting an itch to order something, anything, just get UPS coming to the door please!!!!! LOL

Ha, you guys are great! I'd really like to start gworing more produce, it really is Sooooo much better. Now that I sell weekly in the farmers market, these farmers are so generous, and they give me tons of things, from produce, to eggs, to apple cider, and honestly, the taste of farm fresh foods is absolutely unbeievable. I've never had eggs this good, and the potatoes are tastier.... even the mixed greens, not so bitter.

So to nurture my greenthumb, in addition to rooting plumeria, my dream is a small garden for fruits and veggies.

I grew Albizia julibrissin (Mimosa Tree) as an indoor plant for three years when I lived in Virginia. Unfortunately I had to leave it behind when I moved to the Midwest. I kept it about 5 feet away from a south-facing window. Kept it well watered in the spring and summer (like most foliage houseplants) and gave it lots of humidity with a pebble tray and misting in the morning. I don't know what to tell you as far as fertilizing goes, I didn't feed mine much at all and still it grew like a weed.

Green seeds = fungicide treated seeds. You'll see green, red, pink, etc. sometimes. Timmy - now that's the way to seed plug flats!!! I gave up on them and switched to soil flats a couple of years back when my bifocals got so bad. I was getting cross-eyed trying to hand seed the darn things so now I can just "sprinkle-seed". ;) Impressive set up indeed! Dave

Lyfia, all great points you brought up, it really helps me plan and think. Honestly we have no set time frame for having this project done, since we have an up and running kitchen in the other part of the house and we are working on the new kitchen as time allows. I spent part of this week filling every little brad hole with putty and sanding everything. This weekend we should get a primer on and if dry time allows the walls and ceilings painted. I think we are at the point we are going to put in the cabinet order too. We still have the floor to put down, sand and seal. Tile the whole range wall, put up shelves. The wiring is done, we still need to run plumbing .. which means going under the house in the Summer .. YIKES! We live in copperhead country, not a fun prospect. Last year my DH got bit, we were very fortunate it was a 'dry bite' though! Valinsv, thanks for the help and suggestions, they are very helpful! Les, I love those 50's dinette chairs and if I was going to do a booth, I'd be all over them. I honestly don't think with a very rustic table I'd be happy with them ... even though they look super cushy to sit on. :) If I do go with these chairs I'd have seat pads made for them. I still haven't put my chair order in, I was all ready to go, now I'm hemming and hawing over details again. Part of me wants to go this way, part can really see everyone sacked out in a comfy booth and chairs playing board games and drinking coco. I know that everyone brought up very valid reasons to stay away from a booth, like people being inconvenienced by having to move to let the inside people out, etc. The thing is though we don't have those types of sit down and eat parties where I see it being a problem. When we entertain adults it's normally in a relaxed, casual setting outside on the deck or around the pool area, where we have large tables in each area. When it's just the five of us here, there would be plenty of seating that we could all spread out. I'm lucky that my girls really do get along, there is not alot of she's looking at me, touching me, breathing my air problems. *LOL* I grew up with 3 siblings, I know how that goes, we spent a lot of time bickering. ;) When it's the kids and their friends having snacks, I don't see it being a problem where the kids would feel inconvenienced. So in short I'm still stuck, I think! *LOL* Sometimes I can see right away the path I want to follow, sometimes I start second guessing myself. *sigh* Normally my Husband will chime in with his feeling on the matter and we'll work it out in a way that we are both relatively happy .. this time he really doesn't seem to care, well other than wanting me to make a plan so we know how to finish the room. ;)

Mxk3 - I was forgetting that heliotrope was a tender annual. I’m winter sowing a lot and whenever I have germination, and the ground is ready, I can plant out pretty soon after that, but I don't try heliotrope. Which is probably more toward the end of April, beginning of May. I start lettuces and brassicas. I should already have direct sown peas in the ground by mid April at least. I have raised beds that warm up early and stay dry, for vegetables. And for the most part, I grow perennials, although last year, I did do more sunflowers and zinnias direct sown. Annuals, like heliotrope I use in pots. And I try to get some pansies and other cold tolerant annuals at the nursery as soon as they sell them, potted up. I’ve never had much luck in starting them from seed and having them ready to plant early. That I would love to accomplish, I love pansies. Pots of pansies will keep me happy until it’s warm enough for other annuals. That must be very frustrating to take the time off to get your garden started and it rains! :-( I don’t ever seem to get enough rain. I do seem to remember a cloudy, rainy May not too long ago, though, and the tomatoes and peppers didn’t do well that year. I can remember a few springs, having to run out and cover everything. I guess I gamble a little, to get a chance to get things out early. Sometimes it works and sometimes I cover, but I haven’t lost plants, so I can’t complain. This winter has been so mild so far, but last year, it seemed mild until Feb/Mar, so I guess we still can’t tell how spring is going to shape up. I think you have a little different climate there in MI then I do here in MA, even though we seem to be the same zone. I am really looking forward to spring and already starting to feel the itch to get out there. [g] So it’s a good thing to have lights to start some seeds under!

Very fun, Moonie! What kind of seeds did you order?

Mike, your citrus trees sound amazing, I would love to have some fruit trees but I have no idea what I'm doing! Haha!

Wendy the farmer's market sounds amazing and like so much fun! (Not to mention YUMMY!) I really admire you for starting your plumie sales, I would love to do exactly what you're doing someday!

To keep myself busy during this off season I am trying to keep my 1st year seedlings alive + a few cuttings & fighting the mite fight. I've potted up 2 avocado seeds after removing the outer skin from the seed but they aren't doing anything. Anyone have any advice for me?

I've also recently ordered a Sunny Delight and a Polynesian Sunset, and then today a Celadine. I can't help it! We have about a month of "winter" left to go so I can start a few on my heat mats.

Avocados are easily started. The basic method is to push 3 toothpicks into the pit and suspend the fat end in a cup with water, with water just touching the pit to about an inch deep. Works very well. Here's a link that explains it better than me.

Mona, those seeds from Brad's are so much fun--you'll love them! My "babies" are now nearly two-and-a-half and getting BIG.

E, I have a fruit tree (or two) for you to experiment with. I'll bring them to you the next time we meet.

Can't wait for spring!

Hey Jen! Thanks so much for the offer, I appreciate that! I always look forward to seeing you guys and I'm also very ready for spring. I saw that Brad's had some Bali Palace seeds so for fun I ordered those and some Cindy Schmidt seeds to play with.

Got my seeds fast! I always like that about Brad's when you order seed... it's like they get them in the mail that same day! And of course there's always extras, and they're always pretty and plump. LOL

E - Mardi Gras seeds are what I ordered. I didn't give it much thought, just wanted some. :)
