Phoenix Canariensis

I have 2 trees quite mature (trunk height 4 feet) that have been doing well for the last 8 years or so since planting. I have noticed in the last 12 months that the yellowing of the older fronds is getting higher. The trees are in shallow (2 feet) of soil on top of rock. The drainage is not as good as I would like. My wife has planted within the cut off frond stumps various flowers (nasturtiums) and succulents which she waters (of course). Does anyone think that this could be causing the problem? I have read that they like good drainage. Could it be that the trunk needs to breathe? She is prepared to remove the plants but not before receiving some expert advice.
