I gave up on most Sabal minors as they are soooo slow growing (even in Florida). I had an unnamed variety a while back (in a container) and I just got tired of it not doing anything. I've had much better success with the minor varieties louisiana and and birmingham. Other than that, you can look at few questions--Is your palm getting good sun, Are you feeding? What's the soil like?

One more thing, Is it getting enough water? They are swamp palms that love water, so if you haven't been watering, and if you've been in a drought, then that may be another reason why it hasn't grown. We were in a drought last summer, and I soaked mine every day, and they still grew very slow, even with fertilizer and plenty of sun.

Njoasis, are you saying that birmingham is faster than sabal minor? If so, I may have to give one a try. I always thought they were even slower than minors.

My 'McCurtain' has done very well in good garden soil. I wouldn't say they're very fast growers up here, maybe putting on only three or four fronds per season. 'Birmingham' is know for being very slow. There are native NC minors that are probably faster than either. You may also consider Sabal 'Brazoria' or 'Louisianna' if you can find them. Both have a rather bluish leaf, but grow faster.

Thanks for the replies. We have been in drought for the majority of the past year and I haven't provided any extra water above what the rest of my plants received. I would be happy for it just to look like a Sabal minor lol. I don't want a trunked palm where I have it planted but if growth rate is that slow then maybe I shouldn't worry about that.

I have had mine for about seven years and there doing great. I have them planted on the east side of my house where they get run off from the roof. Also this year all of them are going to flower.

Roughly 23 year old minor from seed on cold, shady North side of house.

That last pic says it all. Slow-growth, oddly enough, seems to have something to do with minors hardiness IMO.
