Catalog source for tree peonies?

Hi all...

I've just become acquainted with peonies and I'm hooked but just looking at all the different kinds. I'm looking to buy a tree peony in addition to some herbaceous types next fall.

Can someone direct me to a source that sells reasonably priced tree peonies? Your recommendation on a good performer would also be appreciated.

I'm liking what I see with GilbertHWild.com for the perennial type but they don't see the tree types.

Hi. I had great luck with tree peonies from www.dutchbulb.com I recently moved to Texas and had to leave them in Illinois when we sold the house. I am ordering some again. The two I had were beautiful. Most magnificent blooms I have ever seen. They were..Shimanishiki and kamatanishiki... you can find them at the site I gave you. Click on favorite perennials..and go to tree peonies. They have specials where you can get an assortment. I think you will be happy with these. They get pretty large so space them accordingly. If you don't want particular variety only and have Costco in your area, you may want to wait untill February-March before placing your order online or otherwise.
Last two years my local Costco had about 7-8 different names for 8.99/ea.
At this price you could afford to experiment with several plants. Even though they didn't bloomed yet (they are not suppose to bloom so soon, anyway) 3 out 4 I bought, survived and look absolutely healthy.
Beware, that tree peony may require more patience and TLC than herbacious one.

Glad this got bumped to the top again. I thought maybe someone would want to hear how my Costco purchase has gone. I bought 3 TP's from Costco the end of Feb and planted them together in a big pot kept in garage. I was a little confused about Japanese vs Chinese in my earlier post - the Costco tree peonies were Chinese - don't know what Van B sells. I planted out the Cinnabar Rampart (Zhu Sha Lei) about 1 week ago. When I took it out of the pot it had begun developing new roots - good sign. It had begun to leaf out and looks quite healthy. The nice folks at A&D Peonies in WA had told me to plant it before it leafed out if I could - so tried to hurry to get it in the ground. Now its covered with a box as the snow is falling and not expected to quit till tomorrow. My favorite nursery told me that peony leaves would freeze on the tips and look uglier than normal if they weren't covered so my yard looks like a warehouse with boxes everywhere on the herbaceous peonies. The 2 not planted yet are P. Suffruticosa Hu's Red and Paeonia ostii White Phoenix. The P. ostii was a lot later than the suffruticosa's in developing leaf buds and its not as healthy a plant - the stems appear to be largely dead and the new growth is coming from the bottom and from the rootstock. There is a lot of conflicting information on the internet about P. ostii - some say its the easiest to grow, others say its susceptible to diseases and a weak plant. But the picture was pretty! Now I'm waiting for the snow to melt so I can plant out the other 2.

gilbert h wild & sons has some really nice offerings. & fairly cheap too. I got a "ruth cobb" from them a couple of years ago & it bloomed the very next spring after I planted it. I had to have that one as it was named after my grandmother. (her maiden name). they no longer have it on the sale list, but they have 23 others listed in their spring surplus sale flyer ranging in price from $7.50~$18.50. also, I just went to wal~mart last night & they have 2 new peonies for $5.00 each, benefitting the susan g.komen cancer fund. & they are gorgeous pink peonies. plus they had the usual reds & pinks also $5.00 each. so, you could try there too. good luck in your search.

Have bought from treepeonygarden and chateau charmarron and both are great vendors. 10 tree peonies between the two and all had at least 2 woody stems (most had more) and extensive root systems. I would recommend both vendors. Treepeonygarden sells out quickly (they start taking orders July 1 and some plants will be sold out by July 14). With them, I have found it best to wait until August or September and a new icon appears on their website for yearly specials (the prices are much more reasonable) starting at $5/$10/$15/$20/$30 plants that are nice plants. Chateau Charmarron has good prices, great plants, and they dig bare root until the end of December(longer than the rest, makes good Christmas gifts). Both vendors are great, plants are great.

I just received a catalog from Klehm's Song Sparrow (www.songsparrow.com) and they have a huge assortment of herb. and tree peonies(50 types of tree peonies). I have never ordered from them but the catalog was recommended at another forum.

Go with Klehm's Songsparrow Farm (songsparrow.com). Granted, the plants are NOT inexpensive, and neither is the shipping, but the plant quality is superb. That said, I've also got some "box tree peonies" (as in bought in a box from a big-box store) that are doing okay. They just take a long time to mature and bloom.

Must agree with songsparrow.com as a great source. Just shipped three lilac bushes to a friend from them, and the quality of the plants was amazing! Would order peonies from them without hesitation. Not cheap, but the quality is superb.
