Plants per Container

I am looking at growing Jalapeno, Habanero, Cayenne and sivri biber(like Anaheim) peppers in 5 gallon buckets.

How many plants per bucket would you suggest?

I was thinking only one, but if I could get two plants per bucket it would be easier for me. The habanero, I will only have one plant per bucket as I have grown those before and they are big plants.

Any ideas?

If you go to http://harvesttotable.com/archives.html you will find most if not all of your answers. In addition to all the other information they give you for each veggie, they usually give you the information for container planting that particular veggie. Also, you might consider the vertical strawberry tower made out of PVC pipe for your strawberries. I have no where to hang one so I'm going to mount one between two fence posts (that no longer have fence between them). Enjoy all of your container gardening.

I put one plant (larger indeterminates) in a half whiskey barrel with 4 cubic feet of potting soil. Tomato roots really are extensive on most indeteminate types. I would maybe try two plants in your container....

How many seeds/seedlings do you have per container?

Most seed starters move their plants to individual pots after they have had a good start (a couple sets of real leaves) from their initial starting flats. So you can always prick out some seedlings and move them to another pot if you have good germination and you think it is too thickly planted. Some plants have lower germination rates or can be slower to germinate. You might see this with your thyme, rosemary, and lavender. Many people buy these as plants rather than start their own so don't feel frustrated if they are slow or spotty to germinate. Chives start well but are slow to get established plants - they are perennials and take a couple of years to turn into a nice bushy clump. Parsley germinates faster with pretreatment of hot water but germinates without it too. I've grown it in situ many times. Patience is required for that. Basil is as easy as they come to start and grow. You can look up more details on google for starting any of these. Hope this helps! FataMorgana

Melissa, You're welcome. Here's the list of vegetable varieties suitable for growing in containers. This is not an all-inclusive list but it does give you several options for each type of vegetable on the list. With certain vegetables, like bush beans, for example, literally any variety available can be grown in containers. With tomatoes, literally any variety can be grown in containers, although the larger the mature size of the plant, the larger the container it will need. This year, I had several varieties of tomatoes, including Chocolate Stripes, Momotaro, Tropic and Red Defender reach 7' in height in molasses feed tub containers, which probably hold about 20 gallons of soil. Many other tomato plants, including Scarlet Red, Glacier, Sophie's Choice, New Big Dwarf and Red Defender reached about 3 to 4' or so in 7-gallon containers. Still others, including Ildi, Sioux, San Marzano Redorta, and Yellow Ball reached a height of 5' or taller in kitty litter buckets that hold about 5 gallons of soil. All of the container-grown plants produced heavily all season long. So, matching your plants' ultimate size to a container of the right size pays off. If I know where the seeds are usually offered online, I mention the company. However, some companies haven't updated their websites for 2010 so I can't say that they'll have the seed for 2010, just that they usually have it. LOL! Always has to be a troll in the crowd it seems. 1 per pot will be healthier and less stressed. 2 per pot will yield 25 to 50 percent more total pods depending on variety/species.

If you have the space I would choose 1 per pot every time.

How about you do a comparison and let us know how it turns out?

Then there is me who went crazy last season and grew 8-10 Red Habanero plants in a single 20 inch planter. Worked out great also. I got a HUGE yield. THe soil dried out fast due to the extensive root system, but I was happy with the results.

Yes, I would have put one plant per pot if I had room, but I was determined to experiment by growing many varieties. This year may bring more practicality. Well - too early to say now. :)

The above link was shy a little bit of code so redid below.

Way back when I used to have a container gardening website where I had posted all sorts of silly rules etc. Didn't take long to figure out there is no "one size fits all" for container gardeners.

Growing conditions and individual gardening skills vary so greatly that it takes experimentation on your part to see what can be accomplished in your garden. Nothing like peeking over at a successful neighbor's garden to see what works for them. Or join a group of local gardeners for ideas.

Asking here is a good idea too & trying to fit the replies into something that works for you.

ok, how small of a container could a Habanero, Jalapeno, or Cayenne peppers grow in? I see one gallon on some sites, but that seems a little small, because I remember the habanero plant I had in a normal garden was pretty large.

Dean,

Go with recommendations from posters that grow in containers in gardening zones close to your zone #. At least that is what I would do. Say minimum size required for zone 4 is 5 gal. That same plant might need at least 10 gal or larger in zone 10. An experienced container gardener can get by with just about any size he/she wants using various tricks.

A zone 10 might be using shade cloth and a mist system to help his plants perform.

A zone 4 gardener might be doing everything possible to add light and warmth.

Container color can make a difference. I use black to help absorb suns heat in the spring and pile grass clippings around container to keep roots cool in the hot summer. (water down the clippings every few days) I've known people in the south to use white containers and some wrap alum foil around container to reflect heat.

There must be countless other ways to tweak a system.

There were recordings that habaneros will grow a 4 ft tap root.

One of my intended experiments is to grow the same variety in the ground, 1, 2 and 3 cu ft containers for comparisons.

I grow almost all of my peppers in 10" and 12" pots. They are 9" and 11" deep respectively.

Forget the peppers John...that picture looks like paradise. The wildflowers and trees bring me back to my honeymoon trip through New England several years ago. Beautiful.

Thanks, Chris. We think Maine is a pretty place to be.

Most end up being staked--you will be able to tell which are sturdy enough to withstand the wind--the short stocky ones usually don't need it.

I would like to grow peppers in a container that has a 15 inch diameter and is 15 inches deep. I'm not sure how many gallons that works out to - how do you figure that out? I was planning on Jalepenos and was wondering if there are any plants [herbs, flowers] that would do well with the peppers if space permits at the base of the peppers

I GROW A LOT OF PEPPERS FROM SEED
I put most in the ground.
with what i have left i put the in pots & planters.
I DO crowd them in..
I cant imagine how i could have got any more production by planting less plants. they are well watered & they THRIVE!!! I throw many peppers away. only keep the perfect ones... I say crowd them in. I would put 4 in a 5 gallon bucket. only my opinion

15 cm is 6inch pots! Waaay to small!
It does not take any wind at all to make the pots fall over. No can do! I transplanted into 12 and 14 inch pots May 19 (started Germination march 10 and got the first seedling popping up March 18). The biggest plants were 19 inches (48 cm) tall at that point (I'd say my red long Cayenne peppers got the biggest overall in that time-frame)! I brought them outside and a very slight breeze would tip the pots over. I had them bunched up in cardboard boxes for portability when hardening off so it was not a big problem at that time.

When I transplanted them I made it a point to look at every single rootball on every plant. Most of them had roots that had rounded the bottom several times and the entire 6in soil solution was held together by enourmous root systems (of course, enourmous as in a relative sence!). I mean, absolutely no soil sprang loose when lifting them out of the pots for any of them (including small plants). I knew that most people used 10-12 inch pots on this forum, but I thought that 12 (3.5gal)and 14 (6gal) would be better. 14 is probably best for some of the plants, but not for your back when bringing 30 of these in and out of the garage at night (for cold nights)! 12 inch (3.5 gal)seems to be good compromise to me. Not awfully heavy to handle and probably big enough for most plants. Also keep in mind that you have to water and watch everything much more carefully when they are in smaller pots! I'd say do yourself a favor and go bigger instead of smaller for sure.
I do not really have any experience with multiple plants in one pot so I am not going to take a stab at that one. It seems from others here that they did not have any problems with that at all. Hmm. Maybe I'll just try it next year! I do have a few big ones in the 14 inch pots but it does not seem to me that it would hurt any of them to have one partner each. I'll see how big they get over the summer and make a decision in the fall. At that time, I'll have to free them from the pots for disposal (oh, the harshness of it all!), and will get a chance to evaluate the root ball developments.

Heres my two cents worth. I have a been growing peppers now for about 9 years in containers. I started using 8 inch pots they were just to small. Peppers wanted to tip over when they got to full height. I use containers now that are from 10 to 18 inches accross or use 5 gallon buckets. The buckets work best. I have a Red Savina that is 7 years old and now is in a 20 inch pot. The Bucket it was in was to small for the root ball. All my peppers do well and produce well for me. I grow all of them in my solarium on the south side of my house. I would sugest 5 gallon buckets and no more then 1 plant per bucket. With the habenareos you may have one last for several years that way.
