Dying Indoor Pepper Plants Center

Last count there are about 4 dying indoor plant threads.
I am very sorry. I wish I could find a way to help. But being a novice I cannot help.

But here, I dedicate this thread to all those currently dying indoor pepper plants and also ( may God forbid) the future dying plants.

I have had plants near death situation myself but then I got lucky. So I understand your problem and feelings.

Not much here, but here is one of my hot Peppers that I over wintered. "Charapita" The above photo is from Oct or Nov just in a porch window facing South West. I noticed it starting to (get messed up" lol So I Brought it down the basement where my T-5 Sits.

Anyway today is the current stage of the plant after I put it under the lights. It is now being surrounded by my new seedlings for this year.

I think it will rebound but I am still a novice as well. I also got about 5 other Hot Pepper plants that I over wintered being upstairs (Being in a condo it is hard to have a South Facing Window, so Southwest was the best I could do.)

Oh Yeah by the way I brought 3 Bell plants indoors but my Cat at all the leaves.

Hi Mr. Beno, I am so glad that your plants/seedlings are doing just fine. Boy, I needed the good cheering news like this to take me thru the cold days and nights of winter until the spring arrives.

I have over wintered one pepper plant (Ornamental Sangria) It is also doing ok in the company of my seedlings. At one pint I though that it is not going to survive but it did. Now it is flowering.

Well, I doubt if it was a matter of too much grit or gravel, but possibly being out in the sun too abruptly (what looks like dull outside to us is still so much brighter to a plant than what looks like bright indoors to us). And who knows, it's possible being repotted twice so soon might not have been the best idea (and you had no way of knowing that either, especially if other members were pressuring you to do it). What I think is that even if you lose this one (and you could... though stop trying so hard now and give it a rest, especially as almost leafless trees need less water) you can get another one, and you will have learned something from the experience, as we've all had to, it's just part of the process really, and I don't know anyone who's 'escaped' it, so join the club!

Two of them look totally dead. One is hanging on. The hot pepper plant (can't remember which it is, but I think it's Serrano) is doing fantastic. I think maybe the bells needed a light set up for the winter (something I don't think I want to spend the money on...but then, I have to use lights to start a new batch of seeds anyway). We've been remodeling and I just now had time to move my lights and stuff to another room. I'm thinking of putting the plants that look dead under lights just to see if it helps them, while I start a new batch. Would you believe my Datura conked out too? I overwintered it last year and it bloomed nicely outside, in the ground late summer. The stalk had turned to wood outside, I transplanted it back into a pot to overwinter indoors. It was doing great for weeks and then it just dropped all signs of life :-( If I had known that would happen, I would have Summer Sowed more. Ah well...adventures in overwintering... Sorry for your loss, but be proud of your accomplishment. I hear its a challenge to grow Ghost peppers from seed because of their slow germination and slow grrowth. Another factor is that your plant may also went into transplant shock. Usually this happens within the first 24 hours and the first signs is the plant is wilted. When I pot up, I try to do it when the roots are drier before the next watering is due. Once, I transplant them, I water using a Vitamin B1 solution formula for transplants. It works well in that it minimizes the shock on the root system and the plant will not wilt usually. Also, pepper seedlings do not like excessive amounts of water. Every few days with just enough to moisten the soil is sufficient. A little water goes a long way with peppers and they do not like wet feet so much. They like to dry out between waterings. Also, air and humidity play a role as well. If your surroundings are higher in humidity or if you live in a climate with frequent rain or moisture, it does affect your plants and the more frequent waterings your plants may be at a higher risk of dampening off which is the ultimate death sentence for seedlings. It is a delicate balance, and aftergrowing seedlings for over 10 years indoors, in a garage, and in a greenhouse, Iam always learning something. Dont give up...try again and plant lots of seeds if you can. That way if you end up losing some, you would still get a few good plants. Good luck

garwv, of course it grew like crazy outside in the summer. A greenhouse would help. Tomato plants generally don't do well when grown indoors. The air is too dry and there's not enough humidity or light to support them over a long period of time. Tomatoes need 6 hrs of full sun to make fruit and the winter sun is very weak. The window deflects and weakens the light cast upon the plants. I've brought small sized tomato plants in for the winter and they do fine for awhile but they do go downhill and eventually die. You could keep babying the plant and maybe get a cutting from it in early spring. Btw, I do winter over peppers under lights in an unheated well lit room. They struggle but they still produce some peppers.

Look up broad mites on peppers. Might be your problem.

Another thought tip -- Oh heck, call it a RULE -- never put a sick plant with healthy ones.

Said another way: Isolate affected plants until you determine the case of the problem.

When one combines affected plants with healthy ones, sometimes they all end up affected. And that's a very bad thing.

Thanks both. And I will look into it, I took a close up but still hard to tell. And I guess it is a good idea to seperate it from my new seedlings just to be safe.

Perhaps a large population of very small aphids on the undersides of the leaves.

Do those very small white flecks brush off?
If so, they might be cast skins of aphids.

Check the undersides of the leaves.

Look like the cast skins of aphids, definitely....and the 'honey dew' on the leaves (unless that's a treatment of some sort). The distorted new growth has a classic pest look, too.

Let me know what you guys think; I've noticed that the stems on my jalepeno plants are turning brown. I've read different things from they just do that (lignification) to some sort of horrible fungus. I don't think it's fungus, but thinking maybe too much fertilizing if there is a problem. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like long vertical stripes down the stem. My ghost chilis look fine in comparison.

Darkening of the stem and most often at the nodes is normal in a lot of peppers. It may also be affected by fertilizer and the light intensity. As long as the plant is healthy (whic I think your is) I wouldn't worry about it.

BTW: Now that you mentioned it, I checked and a lot of my seddlings have dark brownish stems.

They look wonderful. That coloration is completely normal; many varieties develop it, and it tends to correlate with good light.
