Questions, just questions

Hi all, I would like feedback regarding my plans for the upcoming season.
I generally have my property, which is a tad over 3 acres,sprayed by a "green" professional with horticultural or dormant oil. I also hand pick whatever I can like viburnum leaf beetle. I am considering not having the property sprayed and relying on nature to balance itself. Would you recommend such action? I also am thinking of beneficial nematodes and trichogamma wasps to help things along.
Many of my plants are replacements for Sandy, so young and newly planted. What say you?

you spray the entire lot prophalatically .... ????

would i recommend that ..???

no.. and i would report the service for benign pollution.. regardless of the product used ...

google: integrated pest management ...

think about all the good bugs you are slaughtering ... in advance of the bad bugs ....

Hi Barb Some of your questions are outside my range of knowledge, however I can maybe help on some of them. With regards to planting this plant outside I think you could but I am not sure about overwintering it (someone will know though). If you intend keeping the plant in a pot on a sunny porch I would suggest that you put the plant container inside another container and fill the gap with gravel, this will allow you to water the gravel and help keep the roots cool. You will need 2 fairly big pots to do this as your plant will put on a lot of growth. The plant will respond better if you can give it some form of shade during the hottest part of the day. I bring this up because we have to think of ways to conserve water, fresh water. Growing on the scale we do now is not sustainable. The writing is on the plow shears. 80% of all that water being sprayed on a field, sure it keeps you and a whole lot of people fed. But 80% of that evaporates and floats away. Now too with the fresh water we drink is being polluted by long term nutrient use using mined minerals from else where being dumped in the waters here. Or there because the smoker are going be using hydroponics because they think it’s easy. It’s is as long as you don’t mind stuffing that elephant down the drain every week or two. This machine we’re sitting in front of brings awareness unlooked for. I’m not looking to change your mind. Hell, no I’m too old for that. Thing is tho awareness is awareness. Something you can’t let go because you become aware. This awareness will keep growing like a little itch every time you go to the bathroom. Because in 5yrs your kids will be drinking that.

If a rose genetically will only send up 4 foot canes in your climate then it can’t be a real climber. You might get it to be a taller shrub though. You had mentioned ramblers in an above. Those are the most serious climbers. They get 30-40 feet and more climbing into huge trees. There have been a few posts here where people show off their ramblers. There is a rose called Mel’s Heritage that is fabulous for SoCal and just goes absolutely crazy! Lisa who posts here has the best specimen I have seen. With its Wichurian heritage I think it would be classed as a rambler, although HMF doesn’t specify rambler. If you pay the modest fee for a subscription then you can use the advanced search features. whaisname, you have a rare opportunity to develop an enclave.
The storm may have 'cleansed' the area of much life - plant and animal; harmless and harmful; predators and prey; etc.
Hopefully the vegetation that has been replanted is varied enough to attract a variety of wildlife to keep each other in check.
Given the chance, Mother Nature will keep things in balance.
Give her a hand. Hold off with the chemicals. Put out some monitoring devices so that you may know what is seeking harbor, food and water on your property.

Thanks Ronalawn, I have planted mostly for wildlife and put in a large pond for animals to have water. Also most of what I have planted is native for Long Island. Should I also forget about nematodes and wasps. Open to suggestions?
