How to fertilize Potted Palms?

I just purchased a 10-lb bag of Sunniland Palm fertilizer online, as it's nowhere to be found locally. The instructions give application rates for large outdoor palms, but not small potted ones...which is what I have.

Can anyone give me some guidance on how to calculate how much to use? Do I mix it with water, or just sprinkle it around the tree and then water?

I know that using too little is pointless, but I mostly don't want to overdo it. I've been known to kill my plants with kindness...or too much fertilizer.

I usually use 1 teaspoon per every 6" diamter of the size pot it is in. I use a granular palm food of 14-4-14. I would sprinkle it in the dirt and keep it closes to the sides of the pot. Maybe sprikle a little dirt on top of the fertilizer to keep it in one spot after watering.

Thank you, Palmmandan! I hadn't yet opened the bag when I posted my message. I now see that there's not really a way I could've mixed the fert. with water. It most likely would have just floated around. I appreciate you providing your formula for measuring, which is what I was looking for.

You probably shouldn't fertilize with granular at this point, it should be done earlier in the spring if at all because you don't want less hardy new growth going into winter. I use organics. I use a combo of chicken manure and Espoma plan-tone. Liquid I used fish emulsion, along with liquid kelp when I planted. Miracle grow won't hurt them fertilizer wise, but I believe in organic ferts. Peach-wise, I just asked the same question but I only discussed organics. I was told Captain jack's dead bug is good in the summer, dormant oil in the winter.

I would imagine it is quite rootbound. If you are keeping it potted outdoors, you may want to repot it, going up only one size. Include magnesium, and a light soil drench, and keep on the dry side in winter. Then, in spring, feed with a ratio of 3-1-2 and off they go! Greg in Tampa Bay warm, wet and wacky this october!

It will be ok but don't over water it. If you can pull it outside when the weather is nice it will help it. I don't know about using a halogen shop light, the cold will not hurt it just hard freeze if left outside. Shop light does not equal a grow light.
