NEWBIE - How to reform my "weed garden" into a vegetable garden?
Comments (22)Rent a Rototiller or buy one (link URL below). It will rip out all roots, rocks and weeds. You can then till in some compost, add organic nutrients like Rock Phosphate, green sand, Blood Meal, Bone meal and you have a great start. If you have very bad soil, add in some vermiculite (expensive) but it will greatly improve your soil quality. Alternatively you can use raised beds but that drives the cost up as you have to buy soil as well as the hardware for setting up the raised beds. Here is a link that might be useful: Light weight but powerful tiller...See MoreFlower Garden to Vegetable Garden??
Comments (1)Unless the flowers included bigger things such as large shrubs & maybe ornamental trees, chances are that the roots are coming from elsewhere, such as from nearby trees, & they aren't likely to sprout in your garden. If it were me, I'd just do the best I could, maybe cut the roots that I couldn't get out, & move forward with my vegetable garden. Have fun!...See MoreA strange onion like plant in my vegetable garden
Comments (12)There’s no doubt at all about the id, although it’s Crown, rather than Ground. I mistyped. Although it’s an orchid it is an invasive species and not really something to be encouraged. Did you read the link? Btw there are plenty of orchids which grow in the ground. Another one, also invasive in parts of the US, is Epipactis helleborine....See MoreHow to design and calculate an irrigation system for vegetable garden?
Comments (0)I'm moving to a place in the north of Portugal to start my own business as a market gardener, have been having troubles on finding info on how to calculate the irrigation system. My idea idea is to create a well, which should be 80m deep, pump water to deposit on the top of the property, and then supply the garden (24 beds of 0,75*30m) by gravity as much as possible. What kind of pump is needed, pipes and water deposits needed? I'm on a budget so learn how to and do it by my own is essential. Thanks in advance, Marco Raposeira...See MoreNoel.101
