Dealing with garden refuse - how do you do it?
Comments (16)I compost everything, including yard waste and kitchen scraps and still somehow never have enough compost to go around and at least 1 of my compost piles always seems to have room. Some things are reduced in size by the lawn mower running over it as denninmi described and then composted. Most of the autumn leaves never make it to the compost pile; they get run over multiple times and then raked back into the lawn or used to mulch flower beds. I can process all my stuff that needs composting from all my gardens as well as periodic additions of manure in a space that's a little under 3 1/2' x 12' and can be up to 4' high (except for really large branches which go into the woods) and I actively garden what's probably more than an acre of beds, mixed borders along with a large veggie garden. Can you widen your compost area behind the garage? My mum lives in a suburb where you can put sticks and other yard refuse out for recycling, either bundled in less than 4' lengths or in brown yard refuse bags. (I do most of her gardening.) In my small rural town, there is an area of the town transfer station where yard refuse is collected and composted for those who don't compost....See Morecucumber beetles- how do you deal with them?
Comments (2)Thanks, I really did hate to use the permethrin, after all the whole reason I am growing my own food is so that it will be healthier for my children. But the person here who recommended it seemed like he really knew what he was talking about and I am feeling desperate since despite picking off every beetle I can catch my vines wilt just before the fruit ripens. Very frustrating. That link was to the squash bug page but I found the cucumber beetle page. Most of what they recommend I am already doing but I will plan to try trap crops (which will take up alot of garden space I'd rather use for something I'm actually going to eat) and encouraging bats next year. Other than that there didn't seem to be a whole lot I could do. I have tried row cover, as I said. thanks for the advice...See MoreHow to deal with the death of two close people in one year.....
Comments (2)Madeline, in 18 months I have lost 8 people in my life. In 6 months I lost three of these 8 that were very dear friends. The last one that passed was from suicide and she was my best friend. I am coping. I would suggest you try journaling, it has helped me a great deal. To be honest..life is full of joy and wonderful things..My daughter is expecting her first child! Also it is true that life is full of miserable times and deeply sad times. All of us on the plantet have those up and down times. So know that life is not picking on you. This is just life as it is and you are not alone in this. Accept your mixed up feelings and cry all you need to. You have a little one there and she needs you. You have lots of happy times ahead of you....See MoreHow do you deal with stress
Comments (19)I'm sorry, my post was clumsy, Paleblue. You did say you are heartbroken. I really feel for you and I hope the situation improves with time. The last 18 months have been horrible for me. My SIL died in a tragic accident at home, I was diagnosed with hearing loss, then I was physically attacked and injured (unprovoked- crazy broad..lol), then diagnosed with two brain tumours-cause of the hearing loss, had surgery to remove most of one of them, and am facing surgery on the other (second one is a skull based tumour- not good). During this same time period, my father starting failing and waffled back and forth from asking me to help him with some serious situations he'd gotten himself into, to rejecting any help at all. I got him to stay with me for two months earlier this year, but he insisted on going back to his home, which was 500 miles away. Two weeks after he was found by the police driving his scooter in the driving lane of a main highway he was found dead in his home. Now I'm working on detangling his financial mess- there was no will, and there are not enough funds to get that certificate of appointee "thingy". I'm still trying to work full time, but my balance is poor, my vision is blurry, I can't hear well, and I have some other issues as well as a result of my brain stem starting to be crushed (well, described as "structural damage) on one side (and other stuff... blah blah blah). Anyway, I have a lot of support from family and friends, both cyber and non cyber and that really helps. Before, I was walking or going on the treadmill to burn off nervous energy, but I can't do that as much any more because overactivity causes some distinct pains in one side of my head. So now I throw myself into whatever activity suits me at the moment. Sometimes I organize closets, cupboards, drawers etc. Sometimes I decorate cakes or cookies, or try cooking new things. Sometimes I just hang out with friends. I find focussing on interesting things really gives my mind a break from dealing with my issues. Oh, and one thing I REALLY like is playing that scrabble-like word game that I play with a couple of people- one of them is here. THANK YOU SO MUCH, my friend, for all the hours we play and chat with that game (you know who you are :) )...See Morecali-wanna-b
