Baby its cold outside!

Baby its cold outside... you knowÂ that old jewel by Louis Armstrong and Velma Middleton.

Well, the snow is currently blowing sideways and the forecast is for wind chill of -37C / -34F tonight but my first seed starts of the 2009 season (Bhut Jolokia, Bih Jolokia, Dorset Naga, Trinidad Scorpion, Dragons Claw and Seven Pod) are toasty warm on their heating pads as of tonight.

IÂll be deciding on which (and starting) some of the remaining 50+ varieties I have over the next month and a half. I figure I can manage 30 5 gallon pots x 3 this year in addition to my regular vegetable garden.

Anyone else in the northern climate starting seeds yet and if so, what are you stating now?

Wow, someone who thinks like me! I'm growing 50 diff peppers myself! Started the last 40 today:) I'm just south of mnpls. It's damn cold here too! The high today was 2 below :(

I know, it's all relative, cold sucks.

I'm guessing your starts will see outdoors before mine. I can safely start hardening off until May 15ish.

We're looking for a high around 0Â°F (-18Â°C) today. Right now it's -17Â°F (-27Â°C), windchill of -30Â°F (-34Â°C) and this is using the "new" downgraded windchill calculation. But I'm not going to complain since I noticed it's currently -35Â°F (-37Â°C), and that's air temp, not windchill, in some of the northern parts of the state. At least there's no wind up there to complicate things. Oh Dottie!! Phyllis!! I hope you're cuddled up and toasty warm! Don't venture outside today! Not a good day for building snowmen in your swimsuits! although why you'd want to put your swimsuit on a snowman, I'll never know! :)

The pots and sweaters belong to a retirement home located in a small town 2 hrs away from Cape Town. Winter temperatures drop low, sometimes they get snow in the mountains. I was visiting a friend, saw the sweaters there and thought it was a cute idea! Also it helps the elderly to have their mind active and motivated. You can see they try different designs and colours. They wash the sweaters often to keep the pots clean xD My friend thinks the plants are happier and warmer during the winter. (maybe I should experiment with mine).

It was a beautiful sunny day here today, but cool by all your standards, 16 degrees celsius. I don't know how you all stand the heat, those temperatures are stunning. We've had quite a bit of rain too, which will drive my jades under cover in the tunnel if it keeps up. The different climates really add to this forum, they're fascinating.

That minus 28 degrees Celsius/centigrade that Debby spoke of in Calgary ... ... was about minus 18 degrees F. At minus 40 - both are the same. That happens fairly frequently on our prairies in winter ... and in some of the northern states, as well (if a little less frequently). ole joyful

I think he means -2F since he's in Minnasota. Just wondered why you starting so early. Last year I started my seeds late May 1st and had my fill of peppers by frost, here in Niagara.

It's been in the cool mid 60's here at night with the wind chill and the high 80's during the day.
Only white stuff we have is beach sand...
Manzanos and Baccatums are in bloom.
A week ago it was 33-35 at night and highs were in the high 50's.
Gonna be warm for a week they say.

I have two tiny Lemon Drop seedlings under a CF lamp right now. I usually don't start my seeds until mid-March, but I was doing a germination test, and couldn't bear to toss them. I'm overwintering a couple of plants so they won't be alone. And here in NW Wisconsin, it's currently -8F, soon to be -12F(windchill -24 to -29)later tonight. Tomorrow's 'high' will be -5F. Still not as cold as Bill, though.

It's -6 with a wind chill of -28 brrrrrrrr!! This is lower sw Minnesota. Wide open prairie and the wind does blow. I started fataliis and several of the super hots in rockwool( my first time with it) on Monday. Most of the hotter peppers have a longer time until they ripen so if we start early they make peppers before frost. If we didn't start peppers until May we'd never have a lot of production here anyway.

Sounds like IÂm not the only one frozen in!

fiedlermeister, from what I hear from friends, beside the cold you folks in Maine have had your fair share of snow this year too. Yuck.

smokemaster, youÂre killing meÂ send some of the high temps my way!

chililover, I figured joeknowsjolokia was talking -2F. Definitely not shorts and t-shirt weather!

IÂm starting early for a few of reasons but primarily because of the jolokias slow growth rate. As for starting other varieties by March, last growing season was cool, dim and wet here which resulted in a miserable crop of peppers. I want to get some good growth underway before this years plants head outdoors in case we have a repeat of last years weather.
