If you plant in fall a lot will at least have a single bloom 1st spring. Look for varieties that say fast growing. Fina. Adelmans Peony Paradise, Hollingsworth, A&D and Klehms Song Sparrow have all sent roots that bloomed 1st spring. You won't get a big, full bush of blooms from any barefoot planted that I've seen, though.

Thanks Liz..! Yup a full giant bush is asking too much, but I'd love to get a bloom or two if I could. I'm making my fall list now--actually Fina has most of the ones I want so that's perfect.

Fina sent truly massive roots last year. This is the one that did best out of last fall's roots from them. Think you'll be happy with your roots! It's Battleflag, by the way.

You should consider joining the Mid Atlantic Peony Society, portia if you are near Philly. As a member, you get to buy peonies from the society for half the price or even less than what you order online. The only problem is you do not know what they will offer for sale. They also have itohs and tree peonies at great prices. There are organized trips and events that you can participate as a member benefit. Check out the website: http://midatlanticpeony.org/

thanks kousa--apparently I am located very close to the Peony Garden but didn't find this out until last week which unfort was too late to go visit!

The owner I believe is one of the founders, so I plan to join at some point to get to know some peony lovers close to me. Hopefully I'll see you next fall!

This Edulis Superba was from Gilbert H. Wild and Son and I planted last year. It bloomed 3 flowers. I was very surprise. Sadly, they sent me Alexander Dumas with no eyes, so no bloom this year.

oh that one is a beauty. I ordered a Edulis in my order for fall from Fina a few days ago!
