the tallest peonies

I am looking for tall peonies, for the back of a border. I would prefer doubles over singles but am not too particular as to color. I think all the peony colors are beautiful. I have some peonies in another spot, these are about 3' tall. Are there any taller than that, say, about 4' high?

Red Charm is my tallest peony. I'm sure it's right near the 4' mark, and has only been in it's current spot for a couple of years. It's the only one of my doubles (not sure if double is the right term..it's the BIG fluffy blooms) that didn't flop over this year. Blooms are long gone now, but it's still a great looking plant.

Just visited Countryman's Peony Farm in Northfield, VT this past weekend, and was struck by the height of 'Kansas,' a red double. It really towered...and I was assured it has a strong stem.

Seems like one for you to consider.

Based on what I've seen on them, some of my tree peony seeds will sprout in the fall, or in the middle of the winter with warm weather. I think all peonies are hardy enough to get through frosts and light freezes down into the mid 20s, but the best thing you can do is to mulch them over once the real cold weather hits. I would suggest leaving them alone, and let them get as much photosynthesis as possible, then try protecting everything through the winter. Peonies tend to sprout out of season once in a while.

We've had a nice stretch of spring this week so have been cleaning up the peony bed. I too can't wait! The large green bush in the foreground is Coral Charm, and the bushy green way in the distance is Carnation Bouquet - both have buds already. All 13 made it through the winter, although the plants I purchased as bare root continue to out perform the 3 I purchased in containers. The bed is entering its 4th year, although a few were purchased more recently. It's getting exciting!

Pruning my 20 years old tree peony?

Wow, beautiful! Your yellow one is so lovely! When I was a member of MAPS, I attended a session about pruning tree peonies. I remembered the recommendation was to prune off very old non productive tree peony branches all the way to the base in order to rejuvenate new growths and allow newer branches to develop and grow better. Also, if you see branches that grow into each other, you should prune those off also. Though the tree peony in question at the time was 15 years old. So maybe you can mark those old non blooming branches (or ones that produce small flowers) next year when it is blooming so that you can have some idea which ones to prune in the fall.

Charlie's White will be 'only' 36" visually since blooms (white/yellow center-bomb type) are so huge and heavy that no matter what you do it will bend down.
If you could mange to get it grow straight, 45-48" at least guaranteed.

As a matter of fact, some of the numerous secondary buds still producing flowers (small, though) now, in July.

Hi,
a really tall peony is Saunders' 'White Innocence', it grows to 150 cm and stands well. I late hybrid.
Other tall ones are Rockii tree peonies, which make 2 to 2 1/2 meter high shrubs, and Paeonia ludlowii, which can grow to 3 meters, but its hardy only from 7 upwards. A really tropical peony. Every visitor in my garden is wondering how tall this is.

"3 meters" is about "9 feet".
