So exited about my peonies
Comments (11)Sometimes peonies will bloom south of Birmingham and sometimes not. It is said there was a lady in Montgomery who died a few years ago who had 300-400 and they bloomed well each year. After she died, they never bloomed again, so she must have had some secret that the children, who inherited her home, did not know. I have peonies in Prattville and some years they bloom and some they do not and it is not necessarily related to chill as some years when winter has been mild, they bloom. However, about the time they bloom, here comes the heat and zaps them. I don't think the Lord wanted me to have peonies and delphiniums in Prattville, otherwise, he would have made them so that they would do better....See MorePeonies for the South Project
Comments (2)It appears that the link to their suggested peony list is incorrect on their web site. Here is a good one. Here is a link that might be useful: Auburn Universtiy Suggested Peony List 2008...See Morewant to grow peonies...is it possible in my climate?
Comments (4)Just do a search for peonies for the south and you will find all kinds of suggestions. The chill hours mentioned in many sites are the number of hours below 40F. Auburn University has been doing a study of peonies for the south. They received a number of plants, many tree peonies, when Gold Port went out of the peony business and moved to the North West. So they are another source of information. They have also sent plants all around the area to parks and gardens so you might want to contact them for places you can view peonies, both regular and tree. Rather than tell us your zone, which is mearly your lowest average temperature, where is the location of your garden. A general location may be all that is needed because Peony Man was from Louisiana and knows the areas there....See MorePeonies in South Carolina
Comments (2)Do a search for peonies for the south and there are alot of responses to read. For the most part stay with early bloomers and if you go with a mid-bloomer, stay with the singles. I have had success with 'Bowl of Beauty', 'Sarah Bernhardt', 'Carol' and 'Festiva Maxima'...See Moreplsgrow
