When to start the 2010 growing season

Happy New Year to Everyone!

I am in preparation mode to begin starting from seed. This is my third real season growing, with the first starting way too late and last year starting too early. What would be the ideal date to start the seeds, mainly growing Bhuts and Habs this year, but also a few other varieties that were generously given to me.

Thanks for any advice!

I probably won't start my seeds until the end of February. I do seem to remember some of my chili peppers taking a month to germinate though.

I'm in 5a as well but, there is a bit of a range within 5a. I'm in Ottawa but do not get the advantages another 5a grower would have by the Great Lakes (gotta love the milder lake effect). It all depends where you are within the zone.

As booberry suggested I start most of my peppers in the late Feb. time range. The one exception are my notoriously slow super hots. I start my Bhut Jolokia, Seven Pot and Scorpion seeds early January. I need them to have a really good start early inside to get fruit end of September.

Thanks all! I have a lot of fun planning and planting in my garden, but it's fun to share it with others too! :) There are black raspberries in the first pic on the far right. I haven't pruned them yet - bad me. I have a grape vine on the far left by the shed and in the center of the garden on the green-ish trellis is a clemantis. My plan is to keep growing flowers on the right side of the garden and veggies on the left. Then in the patio area mix flowers and veggies. I also always sneak a few flowers mixed in with the vegetables - like marigolds and sweet peas - I just LOVE flowers! Here is a link that might be useful: my blog

Can I start growing herbs this time of season?

There are oodles of places that sell herb seeds on-line. You can order from them year round. One place that sells both plants and seeds and get this - is in Ontario Canada with you, is Richters. I've ordered from them for years and have been quite happy. As far as plants from them, you may be able to visit and buy some directly. But they don't ship this time of the year as far as I know. I believe the ship starting when the weather warms (i.e. spring) so the plants won't freeze during shipping. According to their website they are 30 minutes northeast of Toronto. One last thing, get yourself some grow lights to augment the feeble, sporadic sunlight we get this time of year. (I live just south of you in Western NY.) I wouldn't try starting seed without augmenting the lighting else you will get weak, spindly seedlings. Good Luck! FataMorgana Here is a link that might be useful: Richters

Honey bees ignore the beans. But we do seem to have a growing number of bumble bees. Also, my crossing has always seemed to be from varieties which have a reputation for "licentiousness:" Long Cut Old Timey Greasy Bean and Goose Bean. But this latest cross was from clear across the garden. Those two weren't even close last year. Now crosses aren't necessarily bad. One can come up with some good stuff this way. Nevertheless, it can be a mess if one is trying to preserve a variety. I know, I naturally tend not to pay much attention to some of the details which change in a cross. I have to make myself stop and pay attention. Over the years I've been gravitating toward reducing some of my varieties, learning to settle down and enjoy my old friends. It's hard, as it is so fun to try new things. But I would be so sad if I didn't have those varieties which are special to our family. I need to protect them. George

I use my transplant outdoors day as a guideline. Mothers Day is my plant outside day. So 6-8 weeks before Mothers day is around Mid March. So I will start them March 17th.

2009 I started them in April thinking they'll grow outdoors more. We had a cloudy drenching May. A cool June. And very little yeilds all year.

2008 I started them in February because I got the itch. By April they were outgrowing the starter cups and I had no room or proper light/air circulation/heat for them and it was too cold to transplant outside.

So 2010 = March 17th.

Some superhots, such as the BJ, can take 150 days to maturity. I started them last year on Dec. 26 (live in Cincinnati, FF is May 15) and had a great harvest. The year before, I started toward the beginning of February and was just starting to get a bunch of pods forming when the killing frost hit.
