Why does everything look like Caribbean Reds?

Must be like "Tastes Like Chicken"...

Nothing like the pics in the times-not rough skinned/blistered , ribbed or enlongated.

To me some in the pic look like Bhuts and or Bhut crosses- some have a habanero type look.
A lot of places call everything Bhut Jolokia-Naga Morich , Dorset Naga , Bih Jolokia etc.
They are all super hot but too different degrees.

I agree. My Caribbean Reds look like Smokemaster's, not the pics in the article.

It's been spaculated that Bhut Jolokia's were originally 7 pots that made their way to India and evelved into the Bhut Jolokia,Naga Jolokia etc.
Some 7 pot strains are hotter than Bhut Jolokia easily.

The photo from the LA Times article looks exactly like the bhuts that I grew last year. I have always suspected that they are actually a cross with something else (although they had the characteristic blistering and were hotter than hell); however, I understand there to be a lot of variability in the appearance of the peppers. I could very well be wrong about that, so I got some seeds from NMSU and am growing them this year to compare results.

There are a lot of Bhut Jolokia versions/strains out there.
Different sources seem to have different pod variations and production rates etc.

The cross above was supposed to be Chocolate Bhut Jolokia.
So I think it was a chocolate HabXbhut cross in the first place because of the blunt end rather than a pointed one like Bhuts have.
I think the guy who said the pic from the paper looks like caribbean reds is reffering to Antillias Carribbean Peppers but they are usually pretty blunt ended too unlike bhuts and they aren't as enlongated as in the pic.
Antillias Caribbeans are pretty wrinkled and ribbed and pretty straight sided rather than tappered.

Just kidding, nice shots of some of your collection. I'm growing a few of the ones pictured this coming season. Can't eat them myself but they're real purdy.

Tons of pod variations out there for the same pepper.
Lots of similar looking varieties too.

I just read all the experts out there calling any red Chinense a Caribbean red these days.

When Red Savinas were the hottest...Any time someone overwatered and overfertilized their savinas and got less hot pods than they liked they were also called caribbean reds.
Though some did look like the caribbean red I grew.

Besides them is purdy pods Chris growed an sent ta me.
Had to show them off again to warm up all youse who live where it's covered in that cold white stuff right now.

Looking at the 7's and nagas whole, yes, they certainly could pass for one another. Looking at your cut nagas is what made me think my bhuts resembled them, however, all of mine that remain are dried, so I have to use my generally spotty memory to think back to what they looked like. I'm overwintering the plant (it was a workhorse), so I'll have a refresher come summer.

Do you sleep with those pods in your bed Smoke? Ha ha . I was wondering how you keep them happy. Now I know.

The pods fight with the dog for bed space....I sleep on the kitchen floor.
They snore too much. :)

I've grown Bhut's several times and have seen variation similar to some of the peppers in the article. There are others that likely are bee made crosses.

Did anyone else have a super hot year for Bhut's in 2010? When I cut mine open for seed, there were drops of oil around the seed. I spent nearly an hour washing my hands afterwards just to be certain I didn't miss any.

If you want good seed from Bhut's, you have to let them turn cherry orange red on the vine. The early orange red pods are not nearly mature.

The other bucket has 2 strains of Galapagoense growing in it which have a very unique perfume to them.

Galopagoense PI 639687 and 97450083-mite survivors,both were sticks like the one in the pot.Thaught they were goners for sure.Can't see new growth very well in pic of the potted one.

What more could I ask for except the smell of bacon and coffee in the morning , at dark thirty , at the lake,then the smell and sound of my puddle jumper starting up then gliding accross a glass smooth lake full of hungry fish...
