Tree Peony Only One Stem (Pics)

Hello all! i have a tree peony i bought it last year after blooming so i could plant it right away. it has only One main stem and it really looks like a tree, at the top of it it has 7 large lovely Buds! The plant needs staking i want the peony to bush out with many stems! it will be more stable that way. It has lots of basal dormant eyes. if i prune back to these next spring will they grow this and achieve a more bushy look? here are pictures to help with what im describing

Let Mother Nature have her way. If you have patience the buds may grow to provide stems. To me it appears you did not plant it deep enough and what is at ground level may be the nurse root.

I would take those rocks and make a decorative bed which I would fill with planting material to see if the buda are tree peony or herbaceous. The other option is to dig it up this fall and replant deep enough so that what appears to be a weak stem is under the ground.

I think maifleur's diagnosis is correct. Look at the leaves produced by those trunk buds and they will probably not be the same as the tree. I would also encourage the digging and replanting in the fall. You should not need to stake your tree peony. Al

This is probably High Noon one of the first yellow tree peonies. It is bred to have its blooms held down as do most of Saunders plants. She can cut the flowers and float in water but nothing is going to change the plants habit. If you have a high wall you could position so the plant is next to it. I have my Alice Harding on the top of a roadside recline and thanks to the path the racoons have made it can be seen beautifully by passing motorest. You can of course purchase on of the other yellows for her as a gift or one of the intersectionals such as Bartzella or Garden Treasure. However they have no winter beauty as their stems are herbaceous in nature and should be removed after fall freezes.

Yep, it's pretty but it sure is a pain, huh, Rita? I hope it melts off sooner rather than later. Still no ice here and warmer temps today, but it's cooling off tomorrow again. I hope you stay warm. Can't you think of some honey-do's for B?

I was worried about that! that was the level it was in the pot when i bought it i didnt know that it needed to be deeper! lol
When i Replant it how deep should it be?

It is hard to take measurements from a picture, but from what I can see I would plant it from 4 to 6 inches above the dog leg in the trunk. Al
